This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it's a double IPA (Can you really say you're surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let's-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we've brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn't quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

22 oz bottle. Pours Amber with many fine particles and an off-white head. Very lemony floral aroma with other citrus hop scents, pine. Herbs seem over the top at first but tend to blend together better eventually. A decent herbed beer.

22oz bomber poured into a shaker. Pours a dark orange with about 2 fingers of white head. Aroma of citrus and lemon with just a hint of caramel malt. Taste is heavily bitter and light sweet. Loads of citrus with some sweet lemonhead candy taste. Good bit of alcohol heat as well. Full bodied with a sticky texture. Lively carbonation and a very long, warm finish. Overall, another great one from Stone. I just wish I would have gotten to try it fresher.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; this is one of those beers that when you have finished you are genuinely upset. I want more, pours dark amber loads of fresh hoppy aromas. Tastes of citrus, grapefruit hints of spice slight caramel good resiny mouthfeel. Stone make superb beers.

bottle - Pours deep amber-orange with a 2 finger head and heavy lacing. It smells of citrus and resin hops. The flavor is intensely bitter with lots of citrus though I don’t get lemon distinctly. There’s also a touch of pine and some resin character. It’s full bodied and very good. Not Stone’s best... but very, very good.

Keg at IndyManBeerCon, 2012. It pours clear amber, with a medium beige head. The nose is pine, tangerine, apricot, light spice, earth, white bread and some honey. The taste is sticky malt, orange, tangerine, Irn Bru, biscuit, resinous, subtle spice, toast, earth and sweet lemon, with a pleasantly bitter finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. An interesting IPA for sure, but not as drinkable as many of their other offerings.

New Beer Distributors, NY 650ml ($7.25): Pour is light amber with a slightly off-white head. Aroma is extremely fruity and a liittle bit spicy. The amount of malt combined with the hops works well in the nose. Taste is sweet at the front then gets increasingly hoppy and bitter, until it tapers off into a nice astringent finish. The beer’s body is very oily, and maybe the lemon oil is somewhat to blame for this, although I don’t taste too much lemon. There is a good amount of citrus, but the fruitiness is actually of a slightly different character. This is very much a good beer, with weird complexities coming out with every sip.

Bomber thanks to Craig! Pours a mostly clear copper color with a hint of sanguine affliction. A medium sticky white head. A rich nose of citrus and pine. The flavor is awesome: big rich lemon and citrus, some caramel, quite balanced in many ways as Stone IIPAs often are. Some lingering bitterness and resin. Very full bodied. Damn good. Spicy rye for sure.

Bomber from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours clear light copper with a 3 finger creamy/foamy off-white head. Aroma has spice and citrus. Full bodied. Foamy carb. Flavor is spice, citrus, anise?, sweetish caramel. It’s not overly sweet, but it doesn’t quit reach dry. There’s a strong veg/herb component. Like sucking on woody twigs of a lemon sort. Really amazing and tasty.

Sampled on draft at D’s in Monroeville this beer poured a caramel-amber color with a medium sized foamy orange-tan head that lingered and left some lacing. The aroma was dryish and bitter orange, pine and dish soap. The flavor was sweet yet bitter with notes of pine, grapefruit, orange, moderately strong caramel, honey and dish soap. Turns dry on the long bitter finish with lingering orange and grapefruit. Moderately full bodied and the alcohol was fairly well concealed. Decent.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Dancing Camel. Thanks beerandbeyond. Clear shiny amber with a white head. Great fresh hoppy aroma with lots of flowers, pine and fruits. Flavor has some sweet malt, rye spiciness, fruity and piney hops and a bitter resinous finish with spicy notes. Medium-bodied.
