This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it's a double IPA (Can you really say you're surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let's-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we've brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn't quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Aroma has nettles, resin and some resin. Flavour is rather sweet and spicy with caramel and some fruity hops. Not the most typical Stone (or American) DIPA. And not my thing – took rather long to finish one fourth of the bottle.

650ml bottle from City Beer, San Francisco, CA
Pours dark orange with a foamy white head. Aroma of spices, hoppy fruits, malts and hints of caramel and lemon. Taste is surprisingly spicy with notes of malts, hoppy fruits and hints of berries, caramel and lemon. Finish is hoppy and bitter with some biscuity notes. Nice, spicy but still quite tasty IPA.

Bomber. Pours a cloudy copper with a small frothy off-white head that diminishes quickly leaving spotty lacing along the glass. The aroma is a strong pine, lemon, and rye. Thick mouthfeel with a strong spicy hop bite with lemon and rye flavor with nice lingering bitter finish. Alcohol present but not overpowering, a very good IIPA from Stone.

bottle to red wine glass. Thanks RadarSock. Room temp. Kind of a medium bodied bright orange beer with a haze. 2 finger head fades to a thin layer of bubbles. Huge earthy and piney smell. Hints of wheat and very oaky. This is a rugged beer. Super strong from a malt backbone. some pine sap taste. some dirt notes...it’s like super malty. I’m not sure about this one. I can get the rye (cheating by reading the description) but not that bitter. It’s not that great. sorry Greg.

Appearance: Pours clear golden with a big off-white head and good lacing
Aroma: Fruity, grapefruit, rye and spices
Taste: Fruity upfront, some caramel, rye, spices (nutmeg?) and bitter lemon in the finish
Decent, a lot going on but the spices took away from the rest of the beer.

22 oz bomber purchased at Bella Vino in Athens, Ohio. The pour is hazed orange golden with a two inch off white head. The aroma is resin bitter hops, citrus peel, grassy lemon verbena, a touch of spice rye and an herbal (lemon oil, I suppose). As it warms, some cloying sweet hot alcohol comes out. The taste is a strange herbal lemon (the oil I suppose) then turning bitter, with citrus peels, then sweet alcohol. The aftertaste shows the spice rye, the lemon oil and a herbal sweet alcohol. The palate is medium bodied, dries out a bunch then shows a bitter roughness with dry resin and a spiced rye finish. Overall, this was just ok for me. The lemon oil especially didn’t work for me, though its never really been my thing.

Very distinct tangerine, grapefruit peel, orange peel, and pine needle nose. Deliciously hoppy! Hazy orange, medium firm sticky yellow head. Full bodied, pretty boozy, intensely hopped, quite bitter. Overripe lemon, overripe orange, malty sweetness. Pine needle accents. Less sharp hop flavor than I expected, especially from Stone, but it does tax the taste buds. Really good. A special beer once you get over the initial mindfuck and it has a chance to warm a bit, but not too much.

Draft at alewife. Pours reddish amber with white head. Nose and taste of caramel malt, red fruits, wood, herbs, sage, grain, orange peel and clove. Finishes tobacco and clove. Medium body.

Growler from Whole Foods pours clear copper with tan head and spotty lacing. The aroma offers up a mix of malt sweetened tropical fruit and a thin floral hop sense with a fleeting bitterness at the end of the draw there somewhere. The taste is rich with flavor hop goodness consisting of sweet candy like mango that slowly pulls up into hop bitterness and floral hop notes. This has loads of hop flavor that’s very hop extract like, which is ‘all good’ as far as I’m concerned. Not my favorite Stone Anniversary offering (the 10th was my fav!) but tasty nonetheless.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, August 2012 bottling. Pours lightly cloudy golden orange color with a nice 2-3 finger dense cream colored head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a thick cap that lingers. Nice foamy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of huge grapefruit, orange zest, lemon zest, lemongrass, pineapple, pine, caramel, floral, bread, and herbal spiciness. Damn nice aromas with nice balance and complexity. Taste of grapefruit, pine, lemon zest, grass, orange, spicy rye, caramel, pineapple, bread, and herbal spiciness. Fair amount of piney bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus, lemon grass, caramel, rye, bread, pineapple, and herbal spiciness on the finish for a good bit. Nice flavor balance and complexity; with a good bitterness/sweetness balance as well. Rye is subtle and not overwhelming. Almost no cloying bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a fairly creamy, sticky, and slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden at 10%, with only a small warming noticed after the finish; very smooth to sip on. Overall this is an excellent Double IPA from Stone. Very unique with the lemon zest and rye flavors, but they work very well. Very well balanced with all flavors including the rye; very smooth to sip on for the gravity. Highly enjoyable stuff as I would have expected from Stone.
