This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it's a double IPA (Can you really say you're surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let's-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we've brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn't quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Tap at Watering Hole. Clear amber colour, small off white head. Aroma lots of fruit, bit of lemon washing up liquid. Some tropical, and nice maltiness, brown bread. Taste similar washing up liquid, slightly soapy, lemon, not as bitter as expected. Finish is almost biscuity, but with lemon and grapefruit bitterness. Quite drinkable and a bit different, but strangely unsure how much I like it. Enjoyed it, but don't really want another.

(Bottle) Hazy amber colour with lasting, frothy, off-white head, leaving traces of lacing. Fruity, hoppy nose with citrus, tropical fruit, apricots, pine needles, orange marmalade, rye bread, mango, passion fruit and hints of fresh ginger. Malty, fruity hoppy taste with notes of lemon peel, grapefruit, orange marmalade, resin, apricots, pine needles, rye bread, tropical fruit and an impressive citric, resinous bitterness in the finish. Almost full body, with soft and chewy malt. Quite sweet. Solid and impressive DIPA (as expected from these guys). Lovely beer!

Another DIPA from Stone, amazing how they find new ways to brew a big hoppy ale, but they do, credit to them. Nice aroma, massively citrusy, great color and lacing. Tropical fruit is first and foremost in the flavor, really nice, almost New Zealand IPA like. Yum
