This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it's a double IPA (Can you really say you're surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let's-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we've brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn't quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Bottle @ Scooper Tasting in Ulfborg. Pours hazy orange amber with small off-white head. Clear aroma of fruit, citrus and flowers, with notes of hops. Sweetish, malty and fruity flavour, interacting wisely with bitter, hoppy notes, ending on a bittersweet and sourish note. Allright but I am used to better things from Stone.

Bottle @ Invasion U.S.A, Ulfborg 2013. Pours hazy orange with a creamy white head. Lots of caramel and bread - that Stone thing. Citrus hops beneath. Way too malty to be really good.

Cask at the Stone 17th anniversary festival. Columbus edition. Almost clear, dark golden in color, topped by a small, white head. The aroma is quite sweetish, pine cones and peaches and some resins. Bitter flavor with pine cones and some peaches. Full body, warming and smooth on the palate. Long finish. Pretty decent this one. 130817

Bottle. Had the regular bottled edition a little more than one year after the release. It’s still a fine beer, but it’s quite obvious it’s been cellared for some time. Anyway, it’s a quite pleasant beer, and as the bottle sample was this old, I don’t change my rating. Would’ve added it at 6-4-6-4-13-3.3 if I was to. 131123

22 ounce bottle. Hazy orange color topped by a thick rocky beige head. Perfumy lemon malt aroma. Rich toasted malt flavor has obvious lemony notes. Lot’s of complex hops come through. Tastes a lot like a lemon cough drop. Lot’s of citrus hops throughout. Finishes bitter and dry.
