This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it's a double IPA (Can you really say you're surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let's-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we've brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn't quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Purchased at La Pasada in Chicago, IL; enjoyed on the first night of the NFL season while doing some work from home. Appearance a slightly cloudy dark gold with a rich but thin white head that rims around the glass. Aroma is very rich in the citrus notes with a bit of bready malts, there’s a lemon presence that is rather potent and smells nice, pretty pleasant aroma. Taste is also pleasant, I can tell that it’s potent but going down it doesn’t really feel like it. It’s also not overtly bitter, the lemon notes really shine through with a light spice kick. Very good stuff, Stone does it again!

Pours a clear gold with a white head. Spicy lemon and citrus aroma. All of the hops in the aroma are there in the flavor with a solid underlying malt base.

Sample at the DBLDP on 09/02/2012: This beer pours a ruddy orange color with a medium off-white head that dissipates slowly. Patchy lacing on the glass. Cirusy hops aroma with some spice and bready malt. Full-bodied with flavors of hops, grapefruit, sweet malt and spice. The finish is lemony with a lingering hops aftertaste. Good beer all around.

Pours hazy orangish color with off white head. Aromas of lemon, orange and grapefruit with some caramel, and rye. Slight spicy rye flavor with lemony citrus and somwe weird off flavor I can’t quite put my finger on. The weird flavor is distracting. Not overly enjoyable. Will not be having this one again.

Bomber from BevMo Valencia. Nose is pineapple, mango, lemon, and bits of caramel. Lightly hazy copper orange with a medium off white head. Flavor is bitter with lots of tropical fruity notes and very lightly caramelized sugar. One of the most "tropical" DIPAs I’ve had.

Clear deep golden in color with a huge fluffy white head that persists forever and leave lots of lace on the way down the glass. Spicy and lemony aromas waft from glass signaling that this is no ordinary IPA. Earthy and herbal hops mesh with just a hint of bready malt aroma. The initial hit to the palette is bready malt until the earthy hops lake over. The spice takes over and when mixed with the lemon provides a mesh of herbal flavor long into the finish of every sip. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet resinous mouthfeel. Interesting IPA. I’m not totally sold on the rye and lemon combo but it is great to try a beer with non traditional ingredients.

Bomber, thanks Brenn79. Pours hazy orange with a thick cream-colored lacy head with excellent retention. Aroma is citrusy--grapefruit and lemon rind, bready malt, cooked vegetables, very Stone-ish. Taste is also very Stone-ish, being very bittersweet. The lemon verbena really comes through, which makes it stand out. Mouthfeel is creamy, body is full. It’s a quality beer, but it’s not the best Stone Anniversary.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Sparrow-Downtown, 8/28/12
Aroma: It has a lot of spice and lemon/citrus to it, with some underlying pine and other hoppy notes
Appearance: It pours a clear golden-orange color with a creamy off-white head and some decent lace-work
Flavor: Tastes interesting, with a lot more of that lemony flavor, medium spice, and a mid-plus bitterness
Palate: This one drinks rather cleanly, with a soft carbonation, a medium (leaning light) body, and a dry finish
Overall Impression: I have to say, when it comes to this beer, I give Stone plenty of credit for: 1) Making a beer that really does not taste like at all like any Stone beer that I have had before 2) Making another Double IPA 3) Going out on a limb a little bit with this one All that being said, it doesn't completely work for me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this one, but it just left me missing something. Still though, much of this beer really hit the mark in my opinion. Ultimately, this was certainly a worthy beer to celebrate the 16th Anniversary, and that is really all that matters.

Bomber. Pours a deep copper with a very decent head and aromas of lemons. Flavor is lemon and caramel malt. It’s decent but an explosion of lemon peel with a little medicinal edginess.
