This year our brewing team was inspired by some exotic-ish additions of the lemony persuasion. Yes, it's a double IPA (Can you really say you're surprised?), but as we strive to do with all our Stone Anniversary Ales of the let's-take-this-IPA-in-a-new-direction variety, we've brewed up a Stone-worthy divergence from tradition. The amount of rye malt we used isn't quite enough to warrant the appellation "Rye IPA," but it still adds hints of spiciness that contrast deliciously with the tropical fruit flavors and aromas of the Amarillo and Calypso hops. Add a few European specialty malts, some lemon verbena, and three more hop varieties to the mix, and you have a highly complex brew melding both bitter and fruity hop notes with rich toasted malt character punctuated by nuances of spicy rye and subtle lemon.

Bottle. Pours clear copper/amber with a large beige head that dissipates with good lacing. Aroma is grapefruit, pine, caramel and a spicy lemony zest. Flavor is spruce, pine, a note of butter, citrus (orange/lemon), spicy rye. Very bitter beer from start to finish. Finish is warming alcohol (abv otherwise very well masked). Very nice beer, but a bit more complex than I like my IPA’s.

22 oz. bottle, pours a hazy orange amber with a small beige head. Aroma of rye malt, orange rinds, citrus peel, tropical fruits and citrus hops - slight spiciness in back. Flavour is quite forward on the spiciness from the rye which dominates, leaving a citrus hop-forward finish. The more you drink, the more dominating the rye becomes, becoming an intense rye hop bomb. Solid stuff, though perhaps a bit too heavy on the rye.

Shared a 22oz bottle with friends. Poured a hazy orange color with a large white head. Aroma was big hops, with sweet malt characters, and a touch of lemon and spices. Flavor was nice, citrus hop bomb with plenty of floral notes to it. Nice lemon character - notes of lemon poppy seed muffin notes. Really enjoyed this particular one.

Both bottle and draught. This rating is from the bottle. Pours with a crystal clear, slightly burnt gold to lightly orange hued body with a large, foamy, just off-white head. Great lace. Aromas are of citrus, pinesol, air freshener, pine, pomelo, tangerine. Mostly all hops. Grassy, light mint, medium alcohol, lots of lemon. Lightly waxy. Very low malt, medium-low ester. Kaffir Lime. Flavors are of lemon balm, verbena, waxy. Lightly toasted malt, lots of citrus, bay rum, and floral hop notes. Light tropical fruit and some melon like notes. Overall bitterness is medium-to medium high, properly balanced for an IPA, with a medium bitter duration. Some grassy and hay like notes. Warming in the finish with very little alcohol flavor. Zesty finish. Lightly oily. Dry, medium bodied, clean finish. Nice.

Pours a golden copper-yellow, with mid-sized head. Aroma is very strong--almost like a lemon air freshener. Flavor is dominated by the lemon verbena (they say "subtle lemon," but it’s hardly that), but there is a nice combination of hop bitterness and rye underneath it all. It’s another typical, outstanding double IPA concoction from Stone. Definitely worth a try.

Tap at Freshcraft - lightly hazy copper beer - soapy lace - powerfully citric, lemony aroma with undying notes of spicy rye and sticky sweet malts - a bit of pine mixes with the lemon, but it isn’t all that pleasant - more like floor polish - oily mouthfeel - taste is highly resinous and bitter - quite astringent, especially up front - a lot of sticky and fruity sweetness through the middle and finish - a lot of harsh bitterness and lemon, again, more of the floor polish variety - really brutish and hard to enjoy.

Pours pale to deep amber into a Sam glass. White pancake head recedes leaving batter lacing. Sweet tropical fruits and resin aromas. Full with toffee and treacle upfront turning to mango and passionfruit before turning to mild pepper before the lasting pine and grapefruit pith finish.

Bomber from Whole Foods Market Charlottesville, VA. Pours a clear amber color with a large frothy tan head. Good head retention. Citrusy aroma, shockingly, along with floral, caramel and the faintest bit of rye. The taste is lemon, grapefruit, lime, rye, spicy herbal notes, tropical and marmalade notes. Medium bodied, no heat, average carbonation. Solid beer.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilbur’s Foco. Pours a fairly clear, rust orange appearance with a light tan head that has pretty good lacing. Dank, grapefruity, fairly spicy, cinnamon-like, herbal hoppy, slightly sprucey, caramel aroma. Very spicy (nutmeg/cinnamon), tangy orange/pineapple/grapefruity, somewhat piney/herbal hoppy, toasty malty, light toffee flavor. Alcohol is masked quite well. Really a strange spiciness going on and seems a bit all over the place. Drinkable but not nearly as good as some of Stone’s other IPA releases.
