Tasting Notes
Moa Five Hop Winter Ale utilises pilsner, Vienna, Munich and crystal malts to produce a distinctive mouth feel and flavour. New Zealand grown B Saaz and Hallertau aroma hops are used to produce an ale with an extremely high bitterness. An English ale yeast completes this ‘Brewer’s Beer’. Moa Five Hop is a strong ale fermented at warm temperatures to maximise aromatic and floral aromas. The English ale yeast provides a low apparent attenuation and sweeter finish. Bottle conditioned, Moa Five Hop will age well. Moa Five Hop is best served at approximately 9-11˚C in a tulip glass.

I’m not an ESB fan, so take that into account. The aroma is a pleasant mix of orange peel, caramel, bread, a little spice and plenty of hops too. The taste is hoppy and dry, but there’s an unpleasant metallic aftertaste and the length is quite short.

From a 375 ml bottle (with cork) or 9/3/2014. Pours a slightly murky golden orange with a big head. The aroma is light, fruity, spicy and yeasty. In the mouth, you encounter lots of sweet citrus fruit and a touch of honey which is more than matched by a very firm, long, spicy bitterness. Has a fullish body and medium carbonation. A quite pleasant drinking, which is probably most like an English pale ale in style.

375ml bottle pours a murky, burnt orange with some fizzy, white head, Nose has some bread crust, some dried malt, some lemon and orange peel, but a lot of that uber pithiness that comes with too much early hopping. Flavor is pretty much the same, bread crust, turbinado sugar, some cracker, then loads of citrus pith. Over carbonation doesn’t help the pithiness or the mouthfeel. Not really good.

Light haze on this deep amber beer. Small pale cream coloured head. Palate is softish but has light minerally carbonation. Airy malt with whisper of cream and toffee. Hops are also light. A little floralness with lesser marmalde and just a touch of grape. Joins up quite well but I wanted more from a 5 NZ hop beer!

375ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours clear amber brown with initially no head, but one eventually comes in to being.gentle toffee aromas, with light grape. Taste has more floral hops coming through, and a nice bitterness. Good creamy texture, bittersweet finish. Nice.

330ml bottle @ OlutExpo 2013
Pours dark orange with a thick smooth head. Aroma of grainy malts, earthy notes and grass. Taste is malty, bready and grainy with some grassy notes. Finish is grainy and bready. A bit unbalanced.
