2008’s anniversary ale - a hyper, Belgian inspired Imperial Stout clocking in at 13.6% abv, but incredibly balanced, smooth, and tasty.

Bottle from New Beer Distributors, NYC, vintage 2008, 2½ years old
The color is pitch black; the head is medium sized, beige, but not persistent. Very strong aroma of tar, roasted malts, liquorice, coffee, phenols. Strong body, but also strong alcohol upfront; the first flavor to pick are liquorice and tar, followed by roasted nuts and light biscuits; there is a touch of vanilla; luckily the sweetness, moderate, wins over the black malts; the final is very warming. Very good, mature.

22 oz. bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks Dany), pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of oatmeal, roasted notes and light chocolate. Flavour reveals intense roasted characteristics, with a little oat and chocolate, followed by a yeasty finish. Full-bodied and a robust palate. Extremely well done.

Enormous, insanely large stout from the happy Pennsylvanians at Weyerbacher. The years have been kind to this beer, tempering that wicked near-14% ABV just enough to make this brew decadently sippable. There’s enough heat to remind you this brute is no meager Imperial Stout, but the complexity of flavor easily makes any liquor burn bearable. The flavor is mocha and chocolate and yeasty, peppery Belgian spiciness, with a mild undertone of barbecue sauce and tobacco. The finish tingles like a beer of this size should, and the lingering aftertaste is neither overly sweet or bitter. Excellent anniversary creation.

Bottle - thanks to colemgm8. Pours nearly black with just a little brown head. Rich aroma is roasty and full of chocolate. So is the taste. Lots of roasty notes, chocolate, and ever so slight bittersweetness. A little molasses and pitted fruit too. High abv is noticable, but not much. Nice body and finishes without any burn. I can’t say I would associate any Belgian ties to this... Really blends together smoothly as it warms and ends up being a 3 hour sipfest. Very nice.

Bomber. Black body with a thick, brown head, mostly diminishing. Enticing aroma of caramel, cookie, dark chocoate, molasses, roasted malts and, unfortunately, lots of alcohol which is to be expected from a big beer like this. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Full body, creamy texture and average carbonation. Lots of alcohol in the finish. Too alcoholic to reveal any subtleties of aroma or flavor.

Bottle from craftbeerdesign. Lots of thanks!!! Pours really black with a two finger creamy dark tan head. Strong burnt malt and yeast/spice aromas. Medium plus body with not very strong carbonation. Flavor is like oak aged - but it isn’t. It seems to have vanilla, and I can imagine oak that can’t be there. Very, very rich and smooth. The finish is quite toasted malt rich. I can’t compare it to anything, except perhaps a stout from Alvinne. It’s more sweet than not in the end, but that’s rather Belgian. Heck, it’s "balanced, smooth, and tasty". Drinks way too easy.

Sampled from the bottle at the 2010 February Circle City Tasting. Poured black with a medium grayish brown head. Aroma had notes of alcohol, dark grains and dark chocolate. There was a slight undertone of bitter hops. Flavor full of strong dark grains and dark chocolate with a bit of alcohol underlying.

Black with nearly no head. Sweet flavour with burned malt, dark chocolate and espresso. Sweet flavour with burned malt, dark chocolate, espresso, hops and plenty of alcohol. Finished sweet with warming alcohol. This one has aging potential. Not bad.
