Bottle shared at Chris and Ruth Pre-GBBF 2017 tasting - London. Cheers! Pours clear deep brown with a frothy, tan head. The nose holds burnt brown bread, light chocolate, some earth. Medium sweet flavour with notes of earthy bitterness, cocoa, dried berries, raisins. Medium to full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Good balance in the finish, nice big chocolate kick, sturdy roast. Solid.

Black with a creamy, sticky light brown crown. Chocolate aroma. Raisins. Praline. Ink. Taste is sweet with a warm and boozy finish. Heavy bodied, oily, moderate carbonation. Okay.

330ml bottle. Opaque, darkest brown colour with small to average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, dark beige head. Dark malty and minimally fruity, hoppy aroma, notes of treacle, caramel, floral honey, praline, lingonberry, some plum and blueberry, later more spicy, roasty and minimally smoky malty. Taste is minimally smoky, slightly roasty, dark malty, slightly fruity, minimally floral hoppy, notes of dark chocolate, a touch of ashes, some honey, praline, caramel, treacle, plum, lingonberry; lingering bitter and fruity hoppy as well as bitter, roasty dark malty finish with minimally metallic overtones, well hidden alcohol. Relatively watery texture, relatively thin body, dangerously drinkable. An Impy Stout that benefits a lot from sophisticated hop usage, allowing ever-changing recombinations of hop and malt aspects: smoke and plum here, chocolate and lingonberry there - praline and lingonberry here, smoke, dark chocolate and blueberry there; and so on... varied and multifaceted right from the beginning till the last drop. Very, very nice.

Bottle at home. Opaque pitch black color, average sized tan to light brown colored head. Smell and taste malts, dark malts, roast, roasted malt bitters come through quite dominantly, on average quite pleasantly bitter. I like this one even though it's somewhat unsophisticated and rough it seems. Sometimes it's a good thing to be a little rough around the edges, and imo this is one of em. 7-4-7-4-15.
