Boilermaker is a copper-coloured IPA brewed with Ben and Tom from Thinking Drinkers. Brewed with Chinook, Simcoe, Cascade and Willamette hops and matured with Penderyn whisky infused oak chips in casks from the distillery, the arts of distillation and brewing combine to create an epic Welsh IPA adorned with a fragrant citrus aroma, a touch of spice with hints of vanilla and a warm whisky finish.

Bottle that Jim shared- cheers! Pours deep amber. Whisky dominates, with sweet vanilla and oak alongside. It’s OK, but Innis & Gunn do the same type of beer rather better.

Flaska inköpt i Cardiff. Mörkt kopparfärgad vätska med vitt skum. Kola och toffedoft med inslag av citrus. Söt maltig smak som matchas av en diskret beska. Fyllig munkänsla. Kort eftersmak.

Clear amber beer with a tidy off white head. Palate is smooth and semi dry. Light malt, touch of toffee. Light vanilla and super light whisky. Touch of sweet banana ester and a light orange tang. Finishes semi dry. Nice beer but some dry hopping might have sold this as an IPA!

330ml bottle from Morris sons. Bought because I’ve quite liked some of Brains craft offerings thus far (not all, mind) rather than the influence of whisky here, which I normally cannot stand. Thankfully it doesn’t get too full on ala Innis & Gun, and boasts a fair mouthful of taste that keeps you sipping.

330ml Bottle BBD end of May 2014, poured into tumbler at home 4th Oct 2013. Looked good, nice copper hue to the reddy brown body, medium depthoff-white/white head that hung around for a while. Wasn’t too sure what a ’Welsh Whiskey IPA’ would or should taste like: I was pleasantly surprised. The hops were well hidden in both the smell and taste, with a malty front dominating the proceedings throughout: hints of whisky did appear within the aroma and flavourings, but not enough to put me off the beer (like Innes and Gunn’s tend too). I am not a fan of citrus flavoured hops and although the rear label claims it has ’a fragrant citrus aroma’ I’m pleased to say my nose didn’t notice it . All in all an interesting and different brew that I enjoyed during a random tasting evening with myself!

Nose is whiskey, cereal slight cola. Not particularly inspiring and dominated by the whiskey. Taste is cereal, slight butter scotch, burnt tofee. No resin, little citrus, leads to vanilla and whiskey liqueur. Mouthfeel is thin. This is distinctly underhopped for a ’craft’ IPA, even for a traditional British IPA it seems to malty, though that is probably from the oak. It’s a mess of a beer that doesn’t work as the flavours bump into each other.

330ml bottle from Morrisons - I enjoyed this, probably because it followed a crappy pale lager. A bit sweet, but had some good citrus nose, and a well rounded body. Bit disappointed with the finish, expected it to be longer and stronger... it wasn’t. Not bad though either way.

Bottle @ Yespr. Orange-amber with lace. Nose of stewed fruit, peaches, lemon, some oak, vanilla. Woody, fruity flavor, mellow and rounded, with caramel. Sweet, but mellow. Oily, silky. Nice.
