One of the benefits of traveling is the possibility of coming across a really different brew. It happened to me last week on a trip last week to Chicago to see the Cubs play. I visited a liquor store in the River North area and found Orenda Volume 2 in a 22 oz bottle to bring home. A quadrupel and barrel aged too? Hell yes. No knowledge about the beer or the brewery so let’s give it a go now. I lift the lid and tilt into my Chimay glass, a nice caramel brown body with a thin light tan head that promptly departs. A smell gives cane sugar, grain, some yeastiness. Then a drink, oh my, pretty fine. Figs, toffee, lots of malt, dark raisin, a touch of the wine barrels. Slightly bitter finishing. I am impressed when American brewers can produce a credible Belgian style. Certainly the case here. The shame is the likelihood of never seeing this beer again. By the way, Cubs got the W, good trip.
