A chewy chocolate-vanilla dream of a porter. Bad Kitty earned its name from the antics of the two original brewhouse cats, who delight in mischievously supervising proceedings.

I was first alerted to this beer via the recently departed legend that was Terry Wogan and his good pal Mason McQueen as they meandered round the city of York stopping to sup this at a fine hostelry in said city, so when it cropped up at the National Winter Ales Festival (2016) naturally I had to give it a go. Black pour with a beige head. Dark coffee roast and dark chocolate aroma with a hint of vanilla and raisin. Deep flavours of dark chocolate, cocoa, cola and raisin. Long malty finish. Very good.

Handpull cask at the Kelham Island Tavern. Black, with very little head but a fair bit of natural carbonation. Chocolate, coffee and oak chips dominate the resplendent aroma. Taste begins sweet but there is an almost immediate bitter/sour hit. Black cherry on the finish. Bitter aftertaste. Complex and moreish.

Lactose aroma, chocolate, blackcurrants and motor oil. Loads of Swiss milk chocolate, espresso, blackcurrants and leather. Awesome.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Opaque brown body with a thin off-white head that quickly fades. No lacing. Aroma of chocolate ice-cream, filter coffee, toffee and hazelnut. Flavour of vanilla, white sugar and chocolate with a strange lemony bite to finish. Thin body with a watery texture. Soft fizz. Doesnโ€™t quite gel for me - the citric hops donโ€™t suit.

Tried at the Lincoln Beer festival 2015. Black colour with tan head. Very sweet chocolate aroma. Flavour was also sweet with more chocolate and dark fruit.

Cask, Fly in the Loaf, Liverpool. Black looks with a medium sized creamy tan head. Very sweet choc laden nose. Flavour was similarly sweet with more choc and notes of dark fruits and malts. Not bad but nothing to bring the house down here.
