Bottle - Xmas gift. Poured a very dark ruby with a dense tan head. Rather unappealing aroma of Oxo cubes, liquorice and acrid sweetness. Heavy carbonation in the mouth feel. Sweetness continues on the tongue with notes of fudge and vanilla essence and some sharp, bitter coffee. Frankly unpleasant. Finish was toffee, dark malt and banana bread. I don’t like sweet dark beers at the best of times, but this I didn’t care for at all.

Cask (gravity) @ The 18th Reading Beer and Cider Festival 2012, Reading, Berkshire England.Clear dark brown colour with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, dark chocolate. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a average to long duration, chocolate. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20120504]

Half pint, cask ale, shared with Finn at Waggon & Horses. Pitch black body, fragile lacework, lacing head. Aroma of milk chocolate. Chocolate and vanilla to the taste buds added by earthy malts. Mid-sweet malty ending. O’boy- like. Soft. Quite tasty, a bit too sweet perhaps (York, 26.01.2013).

Cask@Reading Beer Festival 2012. Pitch black colour, small head. Aroma is big time chocolate with some toffee, mild roast, caramel and mild nuttyness. Flavour is chocolate, roasted malts, fruits and some mild toasted notes. Thin palate. The flavour needs a bit ore complexity.

Cask at Craft Beer Co. on 17th December 2011. Solid black with pale brown head. Spicy aroma with vanilla. Coffee and winter berries in-mouth. Quite sweet aftertaste with rich fruit and Christmas cake notes. Thick full body and engaging texture.

Cask at CBC, London. Pours black-brown with a foamy, beige head. Mild lacto roast aroma. Light to medium sweet flavor, some cocoa, light roast, vanilla for sure, and some modest woody bitterness. Medium in body with fine carbonation. Good condition. Lightly sweet, dry finish, some vanilla notes, milk chocolate, faint roast. Good stuff.
