Cask at the Blue Anchor. It pours darkest brown with thick beige head. The nose is rich, oily, sweet fruit cake, blueberry muffin, roasted malt and jam. The taste is rich, sweet, very fruity, blueberry muffin, blackcurrant jam, liquorice, treacle, Eccles cake, some charred roast and warming alcohol with a smooth, fruity finish. Medium + body and fine, foamy carbonation. Nice jammy berry character to it. Good stuff.

Cask at Ealing beer festival 2014. A dark brown/amber coloured pour with a thin off white head on top. Fruity, malty aroma. Tastes fruity, bitter, slightly sweet and acidic. This one doesn’t work for me at all.

Bottle drank on hols in St Ives. Murky dsrk brown beer with a small pale cream colouted head. Palate is a little dry and minerally crisp. Tangy fruits! Nice touch of cherry with lesser raspberries and strawberries and a whisper of blueberry. Subtle brett and sweetness that offsets the tangy fruits. Finishes semi dry with a mellow bittrrness. Really tasty and interesting and very drinkable too boot!

Bottle 500ml.Clear medium to dark brown amber colour with a huge, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, rotten eggs !! urk ... this is not a good aroma ... Flavour is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter with a long duration, sugary sweet, caramel, and stange not sour and no rotten eggs. Body is medium, texture is oily and sticky, carbonation is soft to flat. [20121208]

Bottle. Dark brownish-amber. The aroma is dark rich fruits adn some oxidaztion, possibly diacetyl. Soft, very fruity, grape-like front, moving towards a maltier, almost bubblegummy character. Rustic and unusual.

Cask-conditioned at the Cornish Beer Festival, The Star, Bath 17/7/08. This was a reddish-amber and badged at 6.7%. Spingo special could never be accused of blandness - I found it to be a sweet English strong ale with plenty of toffee and red fruit, with accompanying moss and lichen by the shovel load, giving rise to some real earthiness by way of contrast. A half pint was great to experience a classic English beer. A pint would have been challenging, a session too much. Fortunately I had the half and enjoyed it.

[i] [b] Bottle, Westholm Londis store, Goring-on-Thames, Oxon consumed 18-05-08 [/i] [/b] Dark brown, cloudy with huge off-white frothy head, which continued to froth out of the bottle 5-10 mins after I had poured half the bottle into my glass. The taste is somewhat unusual, Glens right with the earthy, yeasty description but to be fair it also reminds me of my last attempt at homebrewing i.e. shockingly amateurish. I’ve argued with others before on the forums about Cornish beer on the whole being average or worse save for the odd exception this lends weight to my argument. The label proclaims this to be the famous Spingo and Jack at Westholm stores was so excited about this beer, I really think that I need to get the homebrew kit out because I feel that this is really quite poor I’m afraid to say.

Bottle (bought at the Blue Anchor, Helston): Amber coloured, enormous rocky, fluffy off-white head, very slowly diminishing; rather fruity (citrous, raisins) nose, traces of yeast, wine and peppery hops; quite sweet flavour; long finish: fruit, malt and aromatic hops, warming a bit. A very pleasant, complex strong Ale - maybe a bit too much on the sweet side........................

Bottled. Dark ruby. Rich lively head. Aroma of yeast, sulphur and spiders webs. Sweet in the nose, drying out towards the long, bitter finish. Full- to medium body, but not a lot of malt flavour. Unusual and certainly not stylish, but enjoyable.
