Samuel Adams continues to expand their Small Batch Series in 2012. On the schedule is Verloren, and gose. There aren’t a lot of U.S. brewers making a gose, especially a brewery as large as Boston Beer. That’s probably why they dubbed it “Verloren” or “lost” beer . (It’s Dutch.) The style originated in Goselar, Germany in the 18th century. Gose became very popular the adjacent city of Leipzig, Germany due to a lot of local breweries brewing the style. Gose all but died out during WWII due to brewery closings. Expect this beer to have a touch of sourness, with notes of lemon & salt.

A link to the ales of Saxony that had all but vanished, Gose is a peculiar yet captivating brew. With a base of an unfiltered wheat ale, it’s vivid and refreshing yet also has a softness to it. The flavor is brought to life by an unexpected touch of salt for a mineral quality, and coriander for a peppery spice. The result is an unusual and delicate brew that’s full of flavors to discover. Batch #1

22oz bottle poured into a tulip. Batch #1. Pours a clear dark orange/amber with almost no head. Aroma of coriander, orange citrus and bready malt. Taste is light sour and light salty. Lemon citrus and salt, just as described. Medium bodied with a thin texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, very good. I’ve never had this style, and probably never will again. Very interesting and another home run from Boston Beer Company.

Bottle. Pours with a hazy amber to sunset golden hued body with a lasting, small, pure white head. Good lace. Aromas are of baked bread, slightly doughy and biscuity. Coriander, lightly salty, mild ester, nice malt profile. Light pear and lemon, light lactic, very floral coriander. Flavors show a very low lactic tartness, mild salt, floral, coriander, mostly bready, malty, biscuity and grainy. Very nice malt character, but doesn’t feel traditional. Clean and crisp but feels a bit too weighted. Medium to lively bubbles with a fuller bodied than I expected. A bit of a mouth watering saltiness left on the palate. A bit heavy and very heavy handed on the coriander. Not a traditional Gose at all, but still pretty pleasant. No real tartness or salt, just a ton of fresh coriander.

Bottle for $6.00 at Gary’s Beverage, Portsmouth, NH. Used a mug. Showed a clear amber / gold with steady carbonation. Unfiltered, uh?? Nice head retention, staying until the last drop. Bready yeasty aroma. Flavor is wheat, lemon zest and a touch of peppery spice. I do get a taste of salt after the sip. Leading to a dry, salty mouthfeel. This is a nice attempt at a beer that most American breweries don’t do but if I’m buying another SA small batch; it wouldn’t be this one.

On tap at SPSBF. Pours a hazy gold with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has an earthy grain note with backing sweetness and light fruit that has a hint of tartness. Flavor is similar with sweet grains throughout and a hint of light tart in the finish.

Bottle @ Dan’s house. Clear, orange appearance with a white head. A bit salty, fairly spicy, citrusy, orange, a bit tangy aroma. Salty, tangy tangerine, spicy coriander, tart lemon, weird flavor. Interesting.

Bottle. Light sour malt aroma with a hint of lemon and salt. Hazy golden yellow color with giant off-white head. Slightly sweet wheat malt and lemon peel flavor with a hint of salt in the finish. Light body. Decent - pretty light though.

Pours a slightly hazy medium amber color with a decent white head that leaves lots of stickage. Smells of spicy wheat and a pepper with hints of earth and salt. It kind of smells like a peppery macro wheat beer. the taste is sweet with honey like malts, a bit of a spicy peppery bite to mix things up a bit as well as a bit of mineral earthiness. Medium body with a spirited level of carbonation and a slick sweet mouthfeel. Kind of an easy drinking brew, a bit different. It’s only my second gose, but I think I liked the Bruery version a little better.

Bottle from the Folsom Whole Foods. Pours hazy amber with a 3 finger foamy white head. Aromas of wheat and light lemon. Med+ body. Flavor is wheat, lemon zest and a touch of peppery spice. The finish is all that but somehow a bit different - maybe it’s citric sour, maybe it’s salt. Overall a very mild flavor, but somehow suggesting a good pastry (without sugar, etc.)

Right after Sam Adams charmed me with their Dark Depths, they go and louse things up again with Verloren, a fairly piss-poor attempt at a gose. This beer drinks like a harsh hefeweizen with a faint salty lemon aftertaste on the fade. All the character has been removed from the brew, leaving a pretty, vapid, frustrating pint. Skip this and get another bottle of Dark Depths.

Whole Foods, P st, DC 650ml ($6): Pours an orange color with a small head. Aroma is coriander, lemon, and some wheat malt. Taste at first was a bit sweet and malty, and it was only toward the end of the bottle that I really got the Gose flavor in greater force. I only had one other beer in this style, but I really did like the salty, lemon coriander combo, along with the light body. I really wish more breweries would make beer in this style, and I am thankful that at least Sam Adams has.
