This ancient Finnish-style brew dates back to the 1500s as one of the oldest continuously brewed styles. Deep amber in color, this rugged brew’s distinctive aroma and flavor comes from aging on a bed of juniper berries. The herbal, woodsy, and ripe citrus character of the juniper enlivens a sturdy and smooth malt backbone for a fresh and flavorful brew. At Samuel Adams we love experimenting, This series of limited edition brews represents some of our favorite small batch creations.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of thgr81_us. Pours an almost clear amber with an off-white head. Sweet and caramellish nose. Rich malty body, thick caramel and an interesting subtle spiciness. Toffee. Enjoyable - but nowhere close the FinnishSahtis I’ve had (better actually!). 150313

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass; Batch 1, bottled in Spring 2012. Moderately fast gusher upon opening. Pours lightly hazy red copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Slight spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of caramel, toast, toffee, brown sugar, molasses, juniper, raisin, wood, floral, earth, and herbal. Damn nice aromas with good balance, strength, and complexity of malt and juniper notes. Taste of caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, brown sugar, juniper, wood, raisin, floral, earth, grass, and herbal earthiness. Lingering notes of caramel, toffee, toast, brown sugar, floral, earth, raisin, wood, juniper, and herbal on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of malty flavors with the juniper notes; with zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium full bodied; with a very creamy and fairly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice take on the Sahti style! Great malt complexity and balance of juniper flavors; and extremely smooth to sip on. I really enjoyed this one.

Mild berry nose. Clear amber, medium head. Mild curry and vague berru flavor. Unique, but not great.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Sparrow, 1/12/13, Batch #1
Aroma: The nose is sweet and fruity, with earthy and herbal notes, and some sweet breads
Appearance: It pours a clear dark reddish color with a beige head and some mid-heavy, sticky lace
Flavor: Taste-wise, it isn’t quite as sweet as I expected, but it is bready, earthy, and mildly tart
Palate: The body is medium, with a smooth feel, soft carbonation, and a lightly dry finish
Overall Impression: This is a solid beer, but it didn’t blow me away. I thought I’d get more sweetness from the berries, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It is plenty drinkable and has a very solid feel to it. Certainly worth trying.
