They should be good men; their affairs as righteous: But all hoods make not monks. Beneath a deep blanket of snow there is a cereal grain that can survive the harsh winters and acidic soils - RYE. Like a draped hood over a monk, it is the righteousness inside that shines.

16oz van. Maybe the third time through. Unfiltered burgundy-brown body, lacy beige head. Sweet gingerbread/cookie dough aroma. Mellow and not a bad beer, just sort of loses points with the big can, being mediocre. Clean in a thin way, but sticky and sweet as well. New school mediocrity, in a fancy, shiny, new outfit.. unoffensive but unmemorable too. Thickish specialty malt feel, some soapy hops. Not one I’d buy again.

Can @ Jerntorgets Brygghus. Pours hazy dark wooden brown with a rather small frothy brownish white head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet with caramel, cookie dough, orange peal, wood, oatmeal cookies, dark grapes, alcohol, wet soil, sweet dark bread and hints of alcohol. Taste is sweet, bitter and tiny metallic with dark rye bread, orange peal, grass, pine, lemon zest, caramel, toffee, wet leaves and hints of sheet metal. Mouthfeel is oily bitter and medium bodied. Finish is slightly sweet and bitter with burnt caramel, pine, resin, grass, orange peal and hints of metal. A bit harsh...

Crisp, very slightly hazy deep copper and light amber body with a thick, five centimetre tall tan head - very nice looking. Aroma of rye, earthy hops, light resin, caramel and a decent amount of spices. Medium-bodied; Assertive rye flavour at first with a malt and almost herbal, medicinal flavour soon behind with a smooth layer of hops followed by a touch of sweetness. Aftertaste is a bit more subdued with the rye still noticeable, but after a few fruity flavours, and a bit of the spices. Overall, a nice rye-based beer that doesn’t leave the palate overexposed and showing too much of the grains - this is a good starter beer or for someone who typically doesnt like the full flavour of rye. I sampled this pint sized can, purchased from Liqour Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 22-April-2012 for US$2.25 sampled at home in Washington on 15-May-2012.

Sampled from can at Standard market, Westmont. The color is of a brown leaf in autumn. Some rye in the nose that just adds to the experience of a fine beer with more aromatics from specialty malts

Sample at Ale Wine & Spirits in Powell on 04/05/2012. This brew pours a copper-orange color with a medium thin and creamy white head that evaporates steadily. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of hops and grainy malt. Light to medium body with flavors of bready malt and hops with some mildly spicy rye interspersed. The finish is malty with a slightly spiced aftertaste. Decent overall.

Draught at Akkurat, Stockholm. Cloudy copper colour, small head. Perfumy nose with peach and bubblegum. Mid sweet with medoium body and well rounded mouthfeel. Bready malt behind a thick curtain of perfumy hops. Long bitterness in a finish with some pink grapefruit. Really good modern style ale.
