You may have had Black IPA, but you’ve never had a Double Black Belgian Rye PA.

Cohort is a double IPA brewed with Pale, Rye, Carafa and other speciality malts that marry together with a plethora of New Worl hops and a Belgian Yeast to create something entirely unique.

The New World hops mesh together to create an intensely fruity and resinous aroma and taste. A forgiving sweetness balances the insane amount of hops used in this Belgian Beast

(Bottle, 0.33 l - batch COH AAB - BBE 31-12-13, at Kitty’s, 20130625) The beer poured black. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had roasted malts, fruitiness and pine. Palate was medium bodied and warming with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, roasted malts, fruitiness, sweetness, ash and bittetness. Aftertaste was roasty and bitter. This beer showed too much of the porter characteristics. Otherwise clean brew.

Smell of rye and hops. Very dark colour, brown head. Aromas of IPA to start with, ie hops, floral, herbs. Followed by rye aromas and bitterness. Finishes very roasty and ashy with tar and licorice. Taste is both sweet and bitter, varying very much. Flat carbon, oily texture.

330ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with huge, firm, frothyfairly lasting, minimally lacing, tan head. Herbal hoppy aroma with hints of dill, dark malty background, soy sauce, a sourish vinegar touch. Taste is dry, sourish and herbal hoppy, lots of dill, roasty dark malty background. So sourish - must be something wrong with this.

Bottle. Nose is Rye, Raison, soy sauce (!), toast, touch of chocolate mats. Taste is cocoa, some summer fruits from the belgian yeast, leading to salt, licorice, resin and a lasting bitter finish. Mouthfeel is medium. A very nice BIPA (which is still a very silly style)

Bottle from A Tutta Birra, Milan, bb 30/6/2013
Dark brown color with huge brownish head. The aroma is pungent, there is some British yeast more than Belgian, evident sourness, some earthy feeling. It’s too much carbonated; there is flavor of roasted malt, strong bitterness, mild oranges, light peppery note; but the sourness is quite evident and out of place.
Was this really intended?

Opaque black beer, tidy tan head. Semi crisp palate, a little dry. Smooth dark malt with mild coffee. Trace of rye spice. Piney hops - tangy and bitter. A little sweet orange in there. Whispers of esters and Belgian yeast. Smooth finish. Interesting beer, like the concept and the execution.

330ml bottle from Ales by Mail

BBE 31.12.2012 - Pours pitch black with a bubbly white head. Aroma of urinal cake, farmhouse, yeast, spices, hints of rye and fruity hops. Taste is carbonated, slightly roasty and hoppy with hints of yeast, farmhouse and fruits. Finish is fruity and roasty with hints of urinal cake and farmhouse notes. Decent, a bit unbalanced black IPA/saison hybrid
