You may have had Black IPA, but you’ve never had a Double Black Belgian Rye PA.

Cohort is a double IPA brewed with Pale, Rye, Carafa and other speciality malts that marry together with a plethora of New Worl hops and a Belgian Yeast to create something entirely unique.

The New World hops mesh together to create an intensely fruity and resinous aroma and taste. A forgiving sweetness balances the insane amount of hops used in this Belgian Beast

33 cl bottle @ lusikka, BBE 31.12.2012
Rather foamy stuff. Be careful or you’ll end up with just foam in your glass. Aroma has earthy notes and urinal cake. Flavour is sourish with earthy notes, some urinal cake and distant coffee notes. Quite odd, I would take this as a (hoppy) black farmhouse saison.

Rate #1000
As this was really good, it had to be the 1000th rate
Cask @ Hanging Bat, Edinburgh
Black, thinnish tan head, good lacing
Aroma - soft grassy hops, citrus piney hops, touch of zest, nice soft roast malts
Taste - soft grassy hops, citrus hops, bitter grapefruit hops, some pine, really good stouty backbone, chocolate malts, soft deep dark malts. This is what I want to taste in a Black IPA
Palate - medium body, good mouth feel. Finish - bitter hops with roasted malts, bitter hops finish but the dark roasted malts temper them down.
Overall - Great BIPA. I suspect this wouldn’t be as good on keg. The Buxton Imperial Black is still better but not by much. This is definitely a 4.2

Black beer with a brownish, bubbly head. Chocolate (and malt, maybe?) in the aroma. Strong chocolate flavour with a sweet hint, fruit perhaps?

Cask at St Albans beer festival 2012. A black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Roasty, fruity aroma. Tastes bitter, chocolate, slightly sour, hoppy. I was expecting something better from Summer Wine.

Draught at Bishop’s Arms Vasagatan. Opaque black liquid with medium tan head. Aroma of grass, passion fruit, mango, coffee and ash. Taste is dry and medium bitter with notes of grass, ash and coffee. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. All right BIPA. Not bad.

330 ml bottle bought @ The Bottle Shop Canterbury. Pours tiny hazy amberish dark brown with a huge frothy and fluffy beige head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is tiny sweet and spicy with roasted malts, banana bread, cloves, minerals, coffee, dry wood, orange zest, dark bread, leather, black pepper, dusty rye flour, apricots, mandarin oranges, coriander roots, plums and hints of grapefruit juice. Taste is tiny sweet and very bitter and slightly sour with roasted malts, grapefruit juice, orange peal, salty liquorice, dark roast coffee, black pepper, cloves, coriander roots, dry wood, moist grass, dried apricots, dark rye bread, lemon grass, resin, pine, plums and hints of burnt cookies. Mouthfeel is slightly dry, slightly astringent, tiny tart, tiny watery, tiny oily bitter and medium bodied. Finish is bitter, tiny sour and slightly astringent with roasted malts, lemon balm, grapefruit peal, orange peal, black pepper, cloves, pine and dried apricots. A nice try but quite unbalanced...
