Bottle. It’s a clear-looking dark brown beer with a reddish tint. A beige head sits on top. The aroma is lighlty roasted, with some cigar hints, dried fruits and a sourish note. It’s more or less full-bodied, quite dry and with a pleasant carbonation level. The flavor has roasted malts, dried fruits and some chocolate hints, and a little bitterness in the end. It’s also lightly sourish, almost berry-like. Not my favorite in any way. 121110

(Cask at Gallows Bird, 20120908) The beer poured almost black and clear. Its head was small and white. Aroma had roasted malts and chocolate. Palate was less than medium bodied with low carbonation. Flavours were roasted malts, chocolate, grass, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was roasty and bitter. A nice mild but also watery.

Bottle from Deeside Drinks Emporium. It pours near black, with a thin bubbly white head. The nose is roasted malt, charcoal, coffee, soy sauce, meatiness and toasted sesame seed. The taste is roasted malt, charcoal, toast, caramel, metal, coffee, meat and soy sauce, with a dry, roasty finish. Medium body and low carbonation. Too much soy sauce for me to enjoy this.

500 ml bottle, as Strathaven Craigmill Mild Black Ale, from Vaaland, Bryne. ABV is 3.5%. Black colour, large to moderate greyish-brown head. Dryish roasty aroma with notes of ashes, woodwork, cold coffee and unsweetened cocoa, a hint of fruity hops. Too much carbonation in the mouth. Dry roasty flavour, notes of wood and cold coffee, moderate and slightly resinous hops in the finish. Will try again if I can find it on cask, but the bottle (overpriced in Norway) does not inspire me to buy another.
