Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading. Deep amber with a moderate off-white head. Yes! Smokey from the off; nice bonfire night smoke rather than the weird pepperoni of your Schlenkerla’s. Lots of fruitiness behind too, I’m thinking homemade apple and rhubarb crumble eaten after a warming jacket potato cooked on a bonfire. Crisp autumn leaves too in the mildly dry finish, and a little chilli. This is Autumn in a glass. Shame it’s at a Spring beer festival, but loved it nevertheless. Yes!

Cask at the Back of Beyond (JDW), Reading. Deep copper with a thin scummy looking beige head; aroma of smokey bacon crisps; sweet and fruity in the mouth with a clean wood smoke taste; and a dry savoury finish. A fairly subtle attempt at a Rauch Beer, and therefore more approachable than most.

Hamilton Hall Spoons. Cask. Clear deep amber beer, small pale tan head. Palate is light and semi dry. Mild fine carbonation. Dry malt with mild white smoke. Tangy dried fruits, turning sweeter. Smoke comes back and with a mild hop bitterness in tow. Dry finish.

Cask @ Wetherspoons, MK. Copper with a big tan/grey (smoky?) head. Aroma of blackcurrants and wood smoke. Taste is a bittersweet fading quickly to a bitter finish. The sourish aftertaste jars and spoils the experience a bit. I could go for an Arbroath smokie right about now.
