Johan the Barleywine is the first beer ever brewed by Sun King! It is an homage to Dave and Clay’s dear friend and fellow brewer, John "Johan" Hanley, who passed away several years ago. Johan is an English-Style Barleywine that was fermented with a special blend of 10 different ale yeasts. It has a huge malt punch that is delicately balanced with hops from the Northwest. We cellared Johan for an entire year before releasing it and there is a very limited amount available (we are cellaring and barrel-aging a large portion of it).

Shared can with friends. Poured a light ruby color. Aroma was fresh grain notes. Was surprised that this was as smooth as it was. Hop character is pretty low, despite the claims of 60IBUs on the can. Sweet character notes, pretty tasty.

Big thanks to Josh for hooking me up with this can. Pours a clear deep amber with a good amount of brown and a light brown head that dissipates to the edges and remains thinly. Aroma is full of sweet grains and caramel with a bit of light fruit and a decent amount of alcohol. Flavor is full of caramel with some sweet grains and breads. A bit of alcohol comes out in the finish, but solid overall.

Can thanks to Lt.Dan. Pours with a clear bronze body with minimal head. Aromas of brown sugar, dark fruit, sticky caramel and boozy. Flavors are similar. Brown sugar, lots of caramel, a bit vinous, dates, dark fruits. Figs. Very sticky. Surprisingly lively carbonation. Big, sweet, boozy.
