A GOOD HEAD IS ESSENTIAL.
Especially when it comes to stout. We use nitrogen bubbles to give our Ink Stout its thick, creamy head and smooth finish. And without getting all big headed, we think it’s the finest stout in the land. Loaded with roast and bitter dark chocolate, dark fruits, a rich and smooth body with linger dry finish.
Stout was born in london in the 18th century, but while the black stuff was made famous in ireland, it declined in popularity in the capital, until now. This changes everything and stout has never tasted so good.

(Keg at Woolshed, 20140426) The beer poured black. Its head was small, dense and lightly brown. Aroma had liquorice, burnt malts and ash. Palate was surprisingly light bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were burnt malts, liquorice, ash, earth and bitterness. Aftertaste was burnt and bitter. A thin and burnt stout which didn’t please me.

Medium grayish brown creamy lasting head. Opaque black body. Roasty earthy chocolatey aroma. Dryish minty earthy taste with chocolate and herb notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft, smooth mouthfeel. Dryish earthy dusty roasty aftertaste with chocolate pudding notes. Nice, drinkable, unusual. (0.284l draft at Truscott Arms, London.)

Keg at the brewery during the tour. Aroma is nice earthy roast with a hint if caramel. Dark brown with a creamy tan head. Flavour is smooth roast, sweet choc praline and earthy hop. Nice easy drinking stout. Water profile is slightly chalky. Decent beer.

Keg at Blackfriars. Jet black, nice long-lasting beige head. Aromas are mostly chocolate with light roast notes. Taste is sweet, underlining the chocolate thing. Lacks body, even accounting for the strength. OK.

On keg. Appearancestors - opaque black with a nice fawn creamy head. Nose - almost chocolate but not quite. Almost liquorice but not quite. Maybe a salted liquorice is a more accurate description. Taste - more salted liquorice but something coffee and dark chocolate underneath. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long elegant dry finish. Overall - interesting as it’s somewhere in the twilight between stout and porter and it does have that savoury edge.

Keg @ The Hanging Bat, Edinburgh [270713]
Black, dense tan creamy head
Aroma - soft burnt roast malt, touch of burnt toast
Taste of dark caramel, dry roast, bitter chocolate, bitter dark malt, charcoal
Palate - Medium body, smooth, simple. Finish - lingering bitter burnt toast
Overall - I found this a bit disappointing. As a Guinness type keg stout, Samuel Smith’s Extra Stout is better than this
