This year's unique brew is a rye barleywine. It's brewed with 50% rye malt, 50% pale malt, and hopped with Magnum hops. This BEER will gain even more character if aged properly.

I’ve had this one in the cellar for to long now. Sampled 11/15/2008 Pours a clear orangey amber with a smallish off white head that disappeared to quickly. Smells of alcohol, lots of fruits, I smell plums, cherries, and apricots. Has quite the vinous smell to it, almost like I’m sniffing a port. I can also find some spice form either the yeast strain or the rye malt. Very complex and enjoyable aroma. Taste is malty, fruity and quite sweet. I can pick up the aforementioned fruits as well as some caramel and some alcohol. There’s a little hop bitterness in there, but there’s really not much left. I should have opened this one sooner. The hops have faded to the point that the only thing balancing the malty sweetness is the alcohol and its losing. Mouthfeel is sticky and syrupy. Full body with low to medium carbonation. Not bad as is, but I’ll bet it was greater a year ago. I wish I hadn’t waited so long on this one.

Bottle. Poured a clear cloudy golden brown with a tan head that lasted throughout the beer and laced slightly. Aroma was full of sweet grains with a bit of rye and quite an alcohol burn. Flavor was quite syrupy with sweet grains, a bit of rye. There was a some underlying fruit notes and a good amount of alcohol burn.

Bottle, 2007; drank in 2010. Pours a red-gold with a moderate, off-white head. Sweet aroma with bread, caramel, light toffee, some ripe fruits. Sweet flavor with notes of plum, caramel, spice, cherries, apple, rye bread, with light citrus hops towards the end. Nicely attenuated. Medium to full bodied with calm carbonation. Lightly warming. Finishes with sweet maltiness. A very good Barley Wine.

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with a small fading off-white head over an orange body. Aroma is butter, caramel, rye, toast and maple syrup. Taste is banana esters, toffee, and frosted flakes. Creamy carbonation and a syrupy presence.

23rd September 2008. A bit different, this beer is slightly oily in the palate but in a good way. Tastes like a strong lager in some ways but there is also a brandy tone and some rye aromatic sweetness. A heavy beer but that ain’t necessarily a bad thing!

bottle at Ft Wayne tasting - Pours yellow-orange and mostly clear with a thin, lingering head. I think most of the yeast is stuck to the bottom of the bottle. The aroma is malt with a touch of dark fruit and some alcohol. It tastes of sweet malt with mild rye flavor and some woody notes. It’s full bodied and pretty good. The two years seems to have done it good.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured an opaque orange-amber color with a small yellow-white head. The aroma was fruity, sweet and had a touch of pineapple juice. The flavor was fruity, tangy and sweet with notes of honey, fruity hops and light caramel. The finish was long with honey and pineapple. The mouthfeel was extremely thick and syrupy.

Bottled. A hazy golden beer with a rim of beige head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt, alcohol, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of fruit and alcohol, that burns lightly in the mouth. Too strong and too simple. Thanks Papsoe for sharing.

Clear amber/copper coloured body with a very thin slightly off-white head that dies very fast. Aroma of rye, alcohol, whiskey, metal, alcohol, vanilla, bourbon and did I say: ALCOHOL? Medium-bodied; Super-strong alcohol, malt and oak coming out in this with a bit of sweentess and a ton of alcohol. Aftertaste shows more metal, alcohol, vanilla and a touch of spice -nothing nice though. Overall, not a good beer - especially for the style! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Ramsey Liquors on 19-January-2009, sampled at home in celebration of the Steelers Super Bowl Victory (since the beer is also from Pennsylvania - albeit closer to Philadelphia) on 01-February-2009.
