The Grande Noirceur is an intensely black and dense beer with pronounced roasted flavours. The bitterness is very imposing but is balanced by a malty-caramel taste. The alcohol content is quite high, but its presence remains discrete in this beer.

Bottle. Pours black with brown head. Nose/taste of black licorice root, roasted chocolate, burnt toast, roasted coffee, bitter earth and woody alcohol. Dry alcohol and ashy earth finish. Full bodied.

Pours dark brown/black color with brown head. Aromas of dark roasted malts and chocolate. Burnt malt and bitter dark chocolate flavors with some coffee. Full body with minimal carbonation. Nice.

Bottle from Bine & Vine. Pours dark brn/blk with a slight dark tan head that didn’t last long. Aroma is very dark malt with a hint of anise. Full bodied. Flavor is bitter dark malt. Still getting something suggesting anise. Also very dark bitter chocolate. There’s a huge amount of malt, but it is so bitter that it’s not very sweet. All in all this is a dark bitter and extremely tasty beer, tho perhaps a tad challenging. Good stuff.

So, how many massive imperial stouts can you drink in one night? Let’s find out! Also I think Incubus is really a working-class band.... not serious artists, but they deliver what they intend to. Is that necessarily a bad thing? Do we need to see genius in everything? So this pours black like tar with only a modest bit of dark beige head. The aroma is alcoholic barley kind of bolstered by a bit of carbonation, some roasted coffee in there too but soft. The flavour is a lot of sugary sweetness with barley thrown in, chocolately goodness, a gooey chocolate cake experience and icing too. It’s a strong contender in the over-alcoholized stout section but I wish it had more complexity. Drinkable however and a few of these will definitely knock you down in no time.

Bottle. Blackish beer with a brown head. Light roast and nutty aroma with malt. Malt and light caramel flavor with light roast and backing PNW hops. Medium-plus bodied. Light roast and light coffee lingers with malt and light pine.

Bottle from The Beer Trappe, Lexington. Dark brown color. Aroma of roast, coffee, chocolate, herbal hops. The taste is bitter roast, coffee, chocolate, bitter hops, a bit of raisin. Medium bodied, good balance. Nice beer.

The Sampler, NYC tap: Pours black with a light tan head. Aroma is massive amounts of coffee and chocolate, roasted malts, caramel malts... like a high class Milky Way without the sweetness and instead a dirty bitterness bringing it all together. Nice hoppy flavors, but they are mellowed by the smooth body and incredible balance. This took me quite a while to finish, but it was enjoyable through and through.

11.5oz thick bottle. Deep opaque black body. Thin beige head fades away after a few sips. Relatively muted and sublime chocolate aroma. Oily and rich, quite a massive mouthfeel. Big bitterness in addition to huge malt tones. Real deal Imperial Stout, quality. Oily blanket of specialty malt smoothness, reminiscent of some Scandinavian examples. Chocolate dominated but also some licorice, tobacco, leather come out at it warms. An excellent beer.
