The Grande Noirceur is an intensely black and dense beer with pronounced roasted flavours. The bitterness is very imposing but is balanced by a malty-caramel taste. The alcohol content is quite high, but its presence remains discrete in this beer.

12oz bottle pours a fairly viscous opaque black with some lacing, creamy, foamy, beige head. Nose has a ton of licorice, burnt molasses, caramel, dark toast, some toasted grains - rye mostly, lots of chocolate too, some dried fruit lurking as well, raisins and dark mission figs. Flavor has a touch of smoke, plenty of sweetness, both milk and dark chocolate, a little rubber, some bread crust, some coffee grounds, mostly just licorice. Full, slightly astringent, also sweet finish. Smells really nice, but the flavor is a bit of a let down.

Bouteille 750ml (vieillie 1 an) dégustée sur place. Nez de chocolat noir, de malt très rôti, léger de vanille avec des notes fruitées (mûres, cerises noires), de houblon herbeux, de café et d’alcool très doux. Ronde-moyenne en bouche avec un pétillement moyen et une texture riche et crémeuse. Léger goût de mélasse et de vanille avec de faibles traces lactiques (chocolat au lait) et fruitées (cerises noires) lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute rapidement un goût moyennement amer de chocolat noir, de malt rôti avec des notes de café noir puis en finale l’on retrouve une amertume d’alcool moyen réchauffant et léger de houblon herbeux. Post-goût long, moyennement amer de rôti, moyen de chocolat noir, léger d’alcool avec des notes de café et de houblon herbeux. (printemps 2006)

Draft - Roasted malts, smoke, molasses and booze. Jet black with a brown thick never ending head. Syrupy slightly bitter chocolate, roasted malts and a molasses finish. A great stout, absolutely fantastic on tap.

Bouteille 341ml. Couleur noire opaque, mousse abondante et dense couleur lait au chocolat laissant une dentelle éparse. Arôme de malt torréfié, de grains de café et de houblon. Goût de grains de café, de malt torréfié, de chocolat noir léger, sucre léger, longue amertume et alcool en fin de bouche. Carbonation faible, corps riche, huileuse.

Smell is relatively light for style. Aroma of licorice, smoked malt, caramel and a little candy. Pours pitch black with brown mocha head. Lacing and cream foam. Bitter with a light note of sweetness on aftertaste. Some dark chocolate. Lots of basement musk as well. Bottle.

On tap at Copenhagen Beer Celebration. A finger-thick, tan head rests on a black body. The aroma is on the roasted side, with some coffee and a nice addition of dark chocolate. Sweetish flavor, yet it feels dry on the palate. Full body, pleasant carbonation level and some warmth. Roasted malts, some coffee and chocolate as well as hints of leather, prunes and dried figs in the flavor. Lasting finish, mostly on the roasted side. An easy drinking imperial stout, tasteful, quite complex but maybe lacking some body. 120511

Draught @ [ Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2012 ] @ Spartas Lokaler, Faelledparken in Osterbro, Copenhagen, Denmark.Clear dark black colour with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting to diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, burnt, chocolate. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a long duration, choclate, dark roasted, light licorice. On tap at the Dieu du Ciel 14th anniversary party, pours black with a small tan / light brown head. Aroma is very roasted, some bittersweet chocolate and chalky, coal-like notes. Flavour is heavily roasted, with loads of chocolate malt, some wood, but the chocolate and roast dominate this one. Very robust and uncompromising, without being brutal in any way. Excellent stuff.
