Can at Decibel Beer and Metal Fest: pours black with small beige head. Aroma is nutty, dark chocolate. Taste is light bitterness, plenty sweetness, molasses.

On tap at Seven's Gate. Pours black, with a small, foamy, tan head. The aroma is walnut, sherry, dark chocolate, toffee, and pumpernickel. Sweet and earthy, with a pleasant, roasty bitterness. Heavy, grainy, and syrupy. Balanced, complex, and delicious.

Update - accidentally bought more of this recently because I had forgotten I’d had it before - it’s in negative digits right now so I was like, “fuck it, let’s try this stuff mulled” - gotta say when it is hot this beer is a completely different experience - the roastiness of the malt moves forward a lot more, so the sugary sweetness is much more balanced out, as flavors of espresso and dark fruit become much more prominent, along with a mild port wine character - I will not adjust my original rating, but know that if you aren’t too keen on this that drinking it hot may improve the experience. Can - pours nearly black - decent off-white head/lacing - nose smells like milk sugar and chocolate - medium-body - very sweet and sugary, without a lot of the body and depth other imperial stouts of similar sweetness sometimes bring, which makes it taste all the more sweet, as they are fewer other things to focus on - a little roast, chocolate, a tiny bit of smoke, some acidity in the finish that fails to balance - not great, but also not awful.
