Bottle from the old brewery. Very dark brown pretty much black colour. Golden bubbly head, fades quite quickly. Aroma is roasty, bit of coffee, and lots of hoppy citrus fruitiness. Grapefruit sharpness. Taste is initially hoppy bitter, then goes to roasty and chocolatey malt, and finishes a slow fade of coffee and grapefruit bitterness. Very nice and smooth in the mouth. Bit further down more fruit, orange and some tropical hints. Really nice. I must have this again.

Poured from a 330 ml bottle (purchased at the brewery - drank Apr ’12) into a tulip glass to a very dark brown/bordering black colouration with a thick-ish off-white head which gives way after a few minutes. Pine, roasted malts and a little caramel/toffee hit you on the nose. On the palate I quickly picked up on the ’rye’ backbone of this IPA although it does not dominate! At the business end I was getting a hop hit with some citrus notes but allied to roasted malts, liquorice and a litle coffee. Mouthfeel was spot on, medium body and moderate carbonation. Overall another very good IPA from the Kernel, well balanced and a quite a complex series of flavours which all hold up well together!

0.33l bottle (7.1% ABV) from beermerchants.com A deep dark brown one with a massive and lasting beige head that's nicely lacing down the sides of the glass. On the aroma it's really hoppy with citrus, ripe fruits but it also has a really nice - but subtle sweet chocolate thing going on. It smells really nice. It has a really slick texture with a average big-bubbly carbonation level. Flavors are almost roasted-hoppy ans also a bit sweet with dark malts, subtle chocolate, some alcohol, strong bitter - almost peppery finish and aftertaste with a watery mouthfeel in the aftertaste, but the flavor just sticks around forever. Mildly dry all the way also actually. A strange experience, but I liked it. Again a good one again from the Kernel. 18.06.2012

Kernel Black Rye 330 ml bottle bought @ The Bottle Shop Canterbury. Pours hazy dark brown, almost black, with a huge frothy and fluffy brownish gray head that is rather quick to dissipate while leaving some thick trace on the glass. Smell is sweet and malty with caramel, dark bread, grapefruit juice, pine, grapefruit peal, orange peal, lemon balm, dark roast coffee, toffee, chocolate, slightly perfumed tobacco and hints of wood and dill. Taste is slightly sweet, bitter and tiny sour with grapefruit juice, green grapes, dark rye bread, pine, dark roast coffee, grape zest, earthy tobacco, orange peal, roasted malts,  lemon zest, burnt caramel, wood, fresh grass, resin, wet soil and subtle hints of liquorice fudge and fresh green herbs. Mouthfeel is smooth, tiny dry, tart and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, bitter and sour with grapefruit juice, dark roast coffee, dark bread, heavily roasted malts, grapefruit peal, grape zest, pine, grass and green herbs. Another extremely solid beer from The Kernel.
