Farmhouse Ales were originally brewed as “Provision Beers” by farmers in Belgium and France, brewed in the winter months to be consumed during hot summer work days. They were traditionally brewed light and refreshing to aid in both hydration and energy. Wheat and Pilsner malts were used to lighten up the body of this Mad Hatter version. It was also fermented hot with a strain of Belgian Saison yeast to develop flavors of green apple, pepper and fresh cut hay. Brewed for Hatter Days!

Bottled. An unclear dark golden beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of bread, yeast, spices, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, black pepper, yeast, and malt, leading to a dry yeasty and spicy finish.

Bottle bought at Whole Foods Market - P Street (Washington DC) in October 2011. Amber with a medium, quite creamy head. The aroma was ok with lemon, some yeast, hops and perfume. The taste was not as good, the beer felt a bit old. Still drinkable.

Draft at Dexters. Nice hoppy aroma, some caramel, some sugary yeast notes. Filtered dull orange tan. Big, steady off white head. Somewhat watery, not so bold. Lemon-lime dulled hop bitterness, pleasant aftertaste. Mild earthy soapiness. Not so impressive. While it is slightly crisp and refreshing, sort of fails at capturing the style. Like and APA met a really simpe Bierre de Garde. Seawater, subdued.

Slightly hazy copper coloured amber tinted body with a perfect, two centimetre tall slightly-off white head. Aroma of fresh hops, a touch of black and white pepper, pungent yeast, corn, curacao and a bit of lemons - nice indeed. Medium-bodied; Assertive effervescence; Deep resiny and grassy hop flavour at first with a great mildly spicey middle and a good yeast and herbal finish, showing a variety of complex flavours ranging from IPA to Saison then finishing with a Wit - very nice. Aftertaste shows more hops than anything else, but some alcohol is noticeable, a few spice kicks from the pepper and a lot of yeast is still present. Overall, a great beer and a belgian-styled IPA if I’ve ever had one. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 20-July-2011 and sampled at home in Washington on 30-January-2012 as the 100th rater for this fine beer from a finer state - Michigan.

Bottle thanks to someone. Pours with a huge foamy white head over a hazed golden body. Aromas are floral, peppery, estery, phenol, apricot and sage. Flavors are equally floral and spicy. Bitter, grainy, apricot, grassy, hoppy. Stone fruit, lingering esters. Lively carbonation.
