Farmhouse Ales were originally brewed as “Provision Beers” by farmers in Belgium and France, brewed in the winter months to be consumed during hot summer work days. They were traditionally brewed light and refreshing to aid in both hydration and energy. Wheat and Pilsner malts were used to lighten up the body of this Mad Hatter version. It was also fermented hot with a strain of Belgian Saison yeast to develop flavors of green apple, pepper and fresh cut hay. Brewed for Hatter Days!

A hazed dark golden amber ale with a thick frothy lacing off white head. In aroma, sweet caramel malt with resinous surranated hops, light mineral notes, pleasant. In mouth, sweet caramel malt with light resinous hops, light fruity esters, light burned caramel, OK. Bottle from 2011. City Beverage, Burlington vt.

Grapefruit, rosehips, lemon meringue, candi and lime on the nose. Clear orange, enormous head, nice lacing. Grapefruit peel flavor, drier than expected. Lemongrass toward the end. Not nearly as complex as the aroma would have you believe. Another in a line of great American made BPAs.

Bomber. Hazy amber body with a large, fluffy off-white head. Hoppy aroma of grapefruit, resin, citrus. Hints of bubblegum, pepper and clove. The flavor is moderately sweet and moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately to heavily bitter. Medium body, sticky texture, lively carbonation. Lingering bitterness. Taste of grapefruit, floral hops, spice, toasted grain. Peppery. Bitterness mutes most flavors. Interesting beer with the hop bitterness of an IPA and the spiciness of a Belgian ale. Grainy around the edges.

Bomber from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA, opened 6/17ish/11. Pours a hazy auburn color with a large frothy offwhite head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of floral and slightly herbal hops, pale malts, and a spicy finish. The taste is earthy, herbal hops, caramel, pith and a tart yeasty finish. Medium bodied. Interesting.

On tap. Pours amber with a white head. Aroma is mainly citrus and pine hops, with yeastiness following. Flavor has the pine and citrus hops with floral hop flavors and a strong bubble gum yeast flavor. Fairly bitter. It’s decent.

Whole Foods Market, DC 22oz ($5): Pours a cloudy orangish color with a pretty nice white head. Aroma is of Belgian yeast, mild hops, and some citrus. Taste is much in the same way. IPA element is rather subdued, but comes out through the more powerful than usual hops. Plenty of sweet fruitiness. Occasionally sour finish. Pretty good body. Nothing outstanding, but pretty good.

Pour is a orange with a small soapy white head. Aroma is hoppy and spicy. Flavor is a decent enough hop profile with some fruity Belgain yeast to round things out. Probably not the best Belgian IPA I’ve had but this is adequate and tasty.

On tap at New Holland. Translucent straw-orange body, thin off-white head. Citrusy hops nose, spicy, with some pineappley tart character and esters. Spicy hops body, citrusy and bitter with light, tart, fermented fruit (pear, pineapple), herbs, esters (including clove) and toasty, biscuity malts. Well-done, complex, and strays from the overt sweetness and heavy body that plagues many of these "Belgian" IPAs.

On tap. Poured clear gold with a white head that dissipated, but left a nice lace while it lasted. Aroma was mainly sweet grains with a bit of biscuit and hay and just a hint of underlying floral notes. The flavor had more floral with the sweet grains that mainly had a biscuit note.
