One of the brightest stars in a city filled with culinary treasures, Christopher Elbow has been handcrafting masterpieces in chocolate for more than fifteen years. In that time, the reputation of his artistic delicacies has spread around the globe. Elbow’s sweets are distinguished by their use of unusual and sometimes surprising flavors and ingredients. In that adventurous spirit we joined forces to bring you a very special Chocolate Ale.
Medium bodied and effervescent, the aroma evokes dried fruits, earth and cocoa, with just a hint of spicy hops. Mouthwatering flavors of Valrhona chocolate from Dominican cacao nibs weave seamlessly between layers of honey, brown sugar, caramel and nutty malt, deftly harmonizing and rounding into a luscious, lingering finish.

Bottle from Livonia Liquor. Pours a clearish orange honey brown color with a finger of white foam that lingers. Bottle is about 5 months old but loads of floaties visible. Milk chocolate and vanilla aromas on the nose. Beer-like texture on the palate with nice carbonation. More of the same milk chocolate and vanilla on the palate with some bready malt notes and a drying cocoa power-like texture.

Bottle: Poured an amber, which I didn’t expect, with off white head. Aroma is vanilla. Taste is weird mix of artificial chocolate and vanilla.

Tap at Verdugo. Strange, quite flat, but that probably makes sense, milky choc. Confusing but nice though.

Boulevard usually sets high with me as a brewer. I gladly found this 12 oz bottle at Total Wine in Santa Fe, NM last week. Carried home, cooled off considerably (needed because of the hot start to the summer) and lifted into a Belgian chalice, ah, cannot hurt. Wow, it comes out an opaque, light copper liquid, surprised is me. No head to speak of, there does appear to be some carbonation. The smell is lightly chocolate, lightly vanilla. Curious. And the taste, well, that is different. Again small-ball with the chocolate (not even milk chocolate in strength), perhaps some orange, cereal, all somewhat thin. Just a touch of bitterness. I guess the key to this is that it is an ale instead of the usual stout, just my speculation I know my preference.

Bottle. Clear amber, light beige head. Cacao, chocolate, and vanilla notes mixed with lager. Finish is sweet. Not that great.

The Aromas are dark malt, toffee, and a little less chocolate. Flavors are like nose slightly more sweet than bitter not overly, strong carbonation gets in the way. Chocolate is maybe too subdued. Kind of a ho-hum beer.

26.12.2017, 0,75l bottle (best before 12.2014) @ home:
Nice fizzy-creamy mediumlasting head. Aroma is slightly dry sour-ish mineraly, weeds, hay, grass, minerals, old dusty cellar, alcohol, bark, hints of dusty cocoa and grain. Taste is slightly dry sour-ish mineraly, weeds, grass, bark, minerals, old dusty cellar, dusty cocoa, alcohol, paper. Medium bitterness, slightly dry and harsh mineraly mouthfeel. Probably way over the top, still not my cup of coffee.

Poured from a bottle it is a clear amber color with an off white head. The aroma is rich, complex and quite chocolatey with a light vanilla and coffee flavor. Sweet and rich
