Ale with Cacao Nibs, Chocolate and Vanilla Extracts (Smokestack Series)

One of the brightest stars in a city filled with culinary treasures, Christopher Elbow has been handcrafting masterpieces in chocolate for more than fifteen years. In that time, the reputation of his artistic delicacies has spread around the globe. Elbow’s sweets are distinguished by their use of unusual and sometimes surprising flavors and ingredients. In that adventurous spirit we joined forces to bring you a very special Chocolate Ale.

Medium bodied and effervescent, the aroma evokes dried fruits, earth and cocoa, with just a hint of spicy hops. Mouthwatering flavors of Valrhona chocolate from Dominican cacao nibs weave seamlessly between layers of honey, brown sugar, caramel and nutty malt, deftly harmonizing and rounding into a luscious, lingering finish.

Since the bottle said to pour in a Boulevard tulip that is what I did. Yes, I may have strayed from proper glassware, but part of this beer review is also for experimentation purposes. The bottle number is CH13365-1 with a best by date of September 2014.
The appearance is a hazy orange to brown color. Originally, I thought it was what looks like suspended cocoa nibs hanging amidst the body, but the more I look at it the more I believe it to be the yeast. There is a nice one finger white to off white foamy head that dissipates into the body in about thirty seconds. There really isn’t any lacing to be found.
The smell has an authentic cocoa flavoring with a nice allocation of light fruit. I’m going to say peaches.
The taste replicates the smell and ends up leaving a dry bitter and somewhat chocolatey aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sits about a light to medium and leaves a somewhat sessionable quality running about my mouth and tongue. The carbonation seems appropriately matched for rounding out the whole beer.
Overall, chocolate ale, well, kudos to Boulevard. To me, I’m not sure where I got the peaches in the smell and taste, but I like it and for the most part am pretty sure I’d have this again.

Draft at MacDowell Brew Kitchen poured into a plastic cup. Dark caramel brown with off-white head. Aromas of milk chocolate and caramel. Tasting notes of big milk chocolate, caramel, light hops. Medium body with a dry finish. Medium carbonation, medium slick mouthfeel. My expectations were low from seeing other opinions but I really enjoyed this, got a lot of chocolate flavors.

Bottle - Dusty cocoa powder and some fruit. Clearish copper with almost no head. Chocolate and cocoa, bit of spice and light ale yeast. I am not a fan, the flavors do not meld well.

Vegetal nose. Clear copper, medium head. Marzipan flavor with only a wisp of chocolate. I’m not sure what this was supposed to be, but it didn’t quite get there. Not a complete disaster, but has some issues.
