This is a tasty Winter Ale to snuggle up to, released for the winter months when snow blankets the terrain of the mind and the body craves warmth and, let’s be honest, it’s dark and wet most of the time so your beer better be damn good. Winter Ale is dark like the weather with roast chocolate and warm malt flavors balanced by noble hop aroma and subtle hoppy spice. Warm up to it. Because Beer Matters!

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of yespr/Ungstrup. Pours a dark brown with a vague orange hue and a small beige head. Quite some roast in the nose and a whiff of smoke as well. Medium body, very dry roast, some orange notes, ashy, smoky with quite some bittering hops. A solid stoutish offering. 200312

Bottle @ Dan’s house, courtesy of arminjewell. Dark brown appearance with a small tan head. A little spicy, mildly roasty chocolate malty, light minty, piney aroma. Rich chocolate malty, minty, mild coffee, somewhat spicy flavor with a minty fudge finish.

22oz bomber from Elise. Opaque brown-black. Thin beige head. Mellow mouthfeel, subdued carbonation. Chocolate and caramel tones dominate, with a nice well rounded hop bill offering balance and depth. Chewy dark Brown Ale. A mellow beast, this is quite malt forward for a West Coaster. Some piny gingerbread, toffee. Subtle and unique. Some syrupy black malt tones, some brown sugar. A lot going on, but the tastes really merge together.

Dark brown with a thin head. The aroma is mostly woody cascadey hops. Straightforward and earthy/toasty in character.

Bomber from Malt & Vine. Pours very dark brown with a slight tan head. Aroma is floral/grassy chocolate. Med body. Flavor is chocolate, dark roast malt, and some grassy spicy accompaniment. Though there’s clearly a lot of malt, it’s definitely bitter. Good stuff.

On tap at The Taphouse, pours dark amber with a beige head. Aroma of caramel malt, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla. Flavour of vanilla, caramel malts, and bitter (too much so) finish. Decent.
