A Rauch Beer lager brewed in the true Bamberg tradition. Smooth, assertive and well balanced. This beer was the winning recipe from the Norwegian homebrewer’s championship in 2011. We appreciate the fact that Erlann Eldorsen came to brew with us! Ingredients: Pilsnermalt, peated malt, crystal malt, Munich malt, hallertau and Tettnang hops, German lager yeast and Grimstad water.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy brown with a small white head leaving spotty lacing along the glass. The aroma is a strong smoke and oak. Thin mouthfeel with a smokey malt and roast with a nice smoked finish. Easy to drink, a very good smoked from Nogne.

New Beer Distributors, NY 50cl ($9.20): Pours a dark brown with a brownish head. Aroma is somewhat peaty smoke, with a nice amount of malt... almost like a whiskey in ways. Not a very meaty smoked, however. Taste is rather smooth, as is the body. Taste is smoky and a bit sweet. Aftertaste is thick and sticky. Well-balanced.

(Bottle@The Rake, London) Pours dark brown with a tan head and medium lacing. Medium body and taste of malty, smoky roasted, chocolate and caramel. Very impressive.

Bottle at the Copenhagen Beer Celebration Tune-Up, London. Pours lightly hazy red-brown with a creamy, tan foam head. Mild smoke in the nose with some fruity notes as well. Medium sweet flavor with understated smoke, rocks, light coal, light caramel. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Decent smoke comes through in the finish with some dark chocolate, mild caramel. Very decent smoked beer. Somewhat understated, but I suppose that ain’t such a bad thing when it comes to smoked beers.

Milder Beginn mit nur leichter Rauchigkeit. Erfrischend, zu trocken. Auch im Mittelteil zu mild, die Raucharomen sind hier ehr noch geringer. Dunkelmalziger Abgang. Schade! 10/9/8/8/10/8

Bottle shared by Marcus. Pours dark brown with a slight beige head. Aroma of smoke (and pine?). Med minus body. Flavor is ashy charcoal with a hint of toffee or treacle. Finishes dry, smoky and astringent.

25/05/2012 Brasserie 4:20 (tap). Bevuta al Nøgne Ø Special Beer Festival. Bruna, riflessi color miele di castagno, schiuma biancastra leggera, poco persistente. Al naso sentori di malto con note affumicate, splendidamente bilanciata. In bocca ha un’attacco di malto dolce e un finale affumicato. Corpo medio, carbonazione corretta. Davvero molto buona.

Bottle at my Pre-CBC Tune-Up Tasting, thanks to jackl. It pours dark brown, with a thin foamy beige head. The nose is roasted malt, caramel, varnish, filter coffee, salted liquorice and only a touch of smoke. The taste is caramel, roasted malt, smoke (but only a touch), peat, charcoal and toast, with a dry, smoky finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Decent.
