Virginia Brewery Prototype, reflects Stone Brewing’s attention to detail and its goal of producing consistent beers among its production breweries. Due to variations in water, climate, brewing equipment, etc., a single recipe would not necessarily produce the same result at different locations; therefore, Stone’s brewers pumped out the first beer, compared it with Stone IPA from San Diego, tweaked as needed, and struck upon the process and recipe that guarantee the familiar Stone IPA nose, taste and mouthfeel that fans are accustomed to.

Keg at the RVA brewery, 8/5/16. Clear copper, large foamy off-white head, good retention. Aroma of pithy citrus and pale malt. The taste is grapefruit, tangerine, pale malt. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness.

Grapefruit and lillies bouquet. Clear amber, medium yellow head, good lacing. Grapefruit, caramel, lemongrass. Distinct grapefruit peel finish. Medium body, moderate carbonation, resinous. A bit more resinous than Cali Stone IPA, but identical in all other respects.

$4.99 bomber from Wine Warehouse. Pours slightly hazy deep golden with a large off-white to beige head. Very frothy. Nose is citrus, not overly grapefruit/orange/lemon, but some sort of citrus. Taste is grapefruit peel, white pepper, pine, finishes with a smooth maltiness. Very well balanced.

4 oz pour on draft as at B Side. As Stone IPA: Virginia Brewery Prototype. Clear golden orange with off-white head. Aromas of floral notes, citrus. Tastes of grapefruit and lemon citrus, floral notes, nice tropical fruit. Medium body with a dry finish. Liked this one a bit more compared to the CA brewed Stone IPA side by side. 8/4/8/4/16
