This New American Black Ale, our darkest signature beer, has the malt profile of a Schwarzbier and the floral characteristics of an IPA. Saturated in hops, this intrepid style offers smooth dark toffee flavor without the roasted bitterness.

Growler pour at the Beer Shop, East Longmeadow, MA during a meet the brewer event, 19/05/13. Very dark mahogony brown with a thin beige head. Nose is dark malt, light roast, chocolate, pinch of hops. Taste comprises roasted malt, mineral notes, chocolate, hop backbone. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, roasted finish. Good stuff.

Thanks to Peter. Pours dark brown with a little head and some head and minimal lacing. Theres some hops but hard to detect. Some tang at the end of taste. Thick consistency. Taste bitter with some malty aroma. Balance isn’t bad.

Bottle, 75cl corked. A finger-thick, beige head forms over a dark reddish tinted brown body. It’s malty and toffee-ish on the nose, with coffee and some resiny, lemon peel-like hops joining in. Really pleasant flavor, some malty, roasted notes as a foundation for the hops, which gives bitterness and resiny flavors. Full body, quite dry on the palate. The finish has toffee and bitterness, the latter most evident. A beer that didn’t impress at first, but after a few sips, I really enjoyed it. Would prefer an even higher focus on the hops though. 111229

Pours deep mahogany into a Sam glass. Mocha conglomerate head with good retention recedes leaving spot lacing. Chocolate and espresso aromas. Dark chocolate and caramel upfront turning to earthy, bitter espresso in the lasting finish.

clear dark brown, smooth offwhite to beige head. very nice hoppy, flowery hoppy, and sweet roasted malty aroma. flavor is sweet roasted malts, a good dose of balancing hops that are mostly pine and grapefruit but also flovery. The total experience is sweet malty , lots of hops. It is quite sweet for a black IPA.

Dark brown color, almost black. Fizzy aroma, some yeast, and roasted malt. Good body, and good chocolate flavor; strong bitterness, resiny, tickling the tongue; coffeish. For my liking, it’s leaning too much on one side.

750ml bottle. Darkest brown with small firm frothy lacing tan head. Dark malty aroma with roasty notes, a touch of chocolate and a fine hoppy overtone. Oily palate with relatively heavy dark malty, roasty and milk chocolate notes that would do well for an Imperial Stout; very late hop notes can’t change its overall character - more Imperial Stout than Black IPA for me. Maybe some hop aroma was lost while "cellaring" this for a while [bottled Jun 28 2011].

A colabrown beer with a medium and beige head. Aroma is succesfull combination of fruits and dark roastiness, some liquirice, chocolate and wet pine woods. Taste is balanced, dark bready maltyness, citrusfruity bitterness that is at most medium, but that fitts nicely into this beer. Smooth, medium bodied and nice to drink. Balanced and easy enjoyable beer, bitterness isn’t too dominating, due to smooth maltyness that is dominant.

750 ml bottle. Clear reddish brown body with a nice off-white head. Relatively moderate but nice aroma of roasted malt and caramel with some fruity hops. Flavor has roasted malt, caramel, bread, balanced bitterness and fruit. Fine body and bitter aftertaste. A malt driven black IPA, nothing extreme but well made.
