This smooth, honey-coloured ale celebrates the audacity of Tewdric (also known as Tewdrig), a onetime King of Gwent and self-imposed hermit. In the seventh century A.D. he abandoned his life of solitude in the Tintern hills to lead and inspire the Welsh to victory over the Anglo-Saxons at the battle of Pont y Saeson. He received mortal injuries and is believed to have died at the spring now known as St Tewdrig’s Well in Mathern. His passing is commemorated on January 3rd.
The combination of Fuggles and Northern Brewer Hops with blended pale and crystal malted barley produces an ale with a dry bitter character and tangy core. A firm kegged favourite in our local hostelries.

Bottle, courtesy of fonefan. It pours a clear, golden body and a minimal sized off-white head. Very cellar-ish nose, with dried fruits and caramel. Almost cardboard-ish. A bit thin on the palate, with caramel and dried fruits. Not much bitterness at any stage. Well, a beer that certainly didn’t impress my palate. 110819

Bottle from Oakchurch Farm Shop, Staunton on Wye, Herefordshire, purchased and consumed 21-03-10 Pours dark amber brown in colour touch murky following a careless pour, thin white head. Quite earhty and rustic but unlike the other raters I thought there was a good body and malty backbone considering the low abv, some light citrus, not bad, in fact quite enjoyable.
