High colour crystal malt gives this beer a darkly red hue and rich roasted flavours. We use Northdown hops for both bitterness and aroma, which gives a clean counterpoint to the power of the malt and a balanced fruity finish. A fantastic all year round dark ale in the best traditional style.

Old notes from August 2014. 500ml bottle from my Wales trip of that spring. Poured at home in Jersey. It's dark chestnut colour with aromas & tastes of dark berries, caramel, earth & roasted malt. Medium body. Caramel earthy finish. Enjoyable

Bottle from the Hop Pocket near Hereford. A volcanic gusher on opening; in the glass it eventually settled to reveal an attractive, if rather fizzy, deep copper beer with a large Mr Whippy head floating on top. There’s chocolate up front, plenty of roasty maltiness, a little walnut and a mild earthiness. Pretty pleasant bar an aftertaste that has a little granite and metal in it. Nevertheless, not a bad beer at all.
