Victor Ale lets us blur the lines between brewer and vintner. The brew begins by mashing Pilsner malt with locally grown red grapes. It’s then hopped with Hallertau. The beer is fermented first with a strain of wine yeast, then finished with Belgian abbey-style yeast. Victor Ale presents a pale copper hue, medium body, a pronounced vinous character, and a spicy, tart finish. Its beer sibling is Victoria, which uses chardonnay grapes, but is otherwise identical.

Clear amber, small white head.
Tart vinous aroma. Grapes, soft sugary malts, and some herbs. Flavour is quite vinous, but lacks the body i expected, seems a little thin. Light sweet, and a little sour finish, with a lingering candied fruit, and dry red wine.

2013 vintage. On tap at Churchill's Pub and Grille, pours a clear copper with a small white head. Aroma is fairly subdued, with light Grape must and Belgian yeast. Flavour is fairly sweet from the Belgian yeast, with fruity esters and grape must. A little sweet, but that's balanced well by the grape must. Not bad.

Bottle, 75cl corked. A dense, finger-thick beige head forms over a hazy orange colored body. Lacings. The aroma has a vinous touch, without the alcohol, there’s a generic fruityness, some caramel and green raisins and a faint sweetish touch. It’s medium sweet on the palate, full-bodied and with a nice carbonation level. Caramel, some nuts and dried fruits, a generic fruity touch and something vinous. Still no alcohol warmth, the alcohol is barely detectable actually. Lasting fruity and grape-like finish where the alcohol finally shows up, in a good way that is. Nothing exciting going on here, but it’s a solid one anyway. 150612

Bottle 750ml @ Hotel Room, Hotel Lord Berri, Montréal, QC
Pours hazy deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, yeast, dried fruits and grapes. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter with a long slightly warm, malty, yeasty and grape skin finish. Body is medium to full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Bottle. Poured a dark amber color, light off-white head. Aroma was light, cookie, sweet malts, grain. Some earthy hops. Touch of red wine notes. Light vinous character, dried fruits, some light grain, earthy notes. Tasty, and I love Allagash, but this was a pretty pricy purchase for what it was.

Grape beer (so should perhaps be classified as a fruit beer), tasted some years ago, thanks Lieven. Cloudy brownish bronze colour, thin off-white head, quickly disappearing (I guess the oil from the grape seeds could be responsible for this). Very fruity, pleasant, vinous aroma, grapes of course, orange, peach, banana, flowers, toasted bread, honey, pepper, hints of spice. Fruity, estery, ’Belgian’ taste, grapes clearly there with wine-like effect, honeyish and caramelly malt sweetness, thinnish mouthfeel, touch of peppery hop bitterness in the finish with a whiff of warming, bourbon-like alcohol. Very nice and interesting, since grape beers remain a rarity.

750 ml bottle. 2013 vintage. Mostly clear gold color with the lace in a Allagash chalice, thin lace down the sides as I drank. Aroma shows a subtle red grape, house yeast, and a moderate level of sugar.
Body has some of the sugar I am smelling with a mild malt billing. The sugar almost covers the red grape notes, gives a light Welch’s juice character. Mildly light a red wine but more like a juice. This maybe a nice gateway brew if I ever want to convert a wine drinker into the craft beer world. Vinous notes are here without question and it was a nice enough drink.
