Victor Ale lets us blur the lines between brewer and vintner. The brew begins by mashing Pilsner malt with locally grown red grapes. It’s then hopped with Hallertau. The beer is fermented first with a strain of wine yeast, then finished with Belgian abbey-style yeast. Victor Ale presents a pale copper hue, medium body, a pronounced vinous character, and a spicy, tart finish. Its beer sibling is Victoria, which uses chardonnay grapes, but is otherwise identical.

A portion of the proceeds of Victor goes to St. Lawrence Arts Center, located on Munjoy Hill in Portland. Built in 1897 by Arthur Bates Jennings, this National Historic Landmark is an affordable and accesible venue for art, community enrichment, and a piece of local history. Keg at World of Beer Charlottesville, 11/19/14. Pours a slightly hazy amber with a thin fizzy off-white head. Decent head retention. Aroma of caramel, doughy malt, mild cherries and other fruits. The taste is tart stone fruits, citrus, caramel, yeast, spice. Medium bodied, lingering spice.

On tap at Cask and Vine while enjoying the company of Todd the Hoople. Lightly hazy deep straw with hints of purple. Fruity earthy spicy aromas and flavor with a bit of a jelly or jam edge to it. Interesting brew a bit outside of the box, not something I’d have often but glad I got to try it.

Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a dark caramel-orange-brown color with a medium sized foamy orange-beige head that left decent lacing. The aroma was sweet and tangy bread, sugar, golden fruits, a bit of dark fruits, fig, toffee and caramel. The flavor was tangy and sweet caramel, nut, rum, golden fruits, dark fruits, a bit of astringency and a hint of perfume. Medium length finish. Moderately full bodied. Pretty tasty.

Good but rather light on the overall palate. Not anywhere near some of allagash’s better stuff, but still decent. Pours hazy amber with good head and lacing. Light sweet finish. Some floral yeast. Tap at Churchkey.

Washington Commons, Brooklyn tap ($11): Pours orange with a white head. Aroma is wood, red wine, citrus, yeast, and some spice. I found that the woody taste was very unique to this beer. Furthermore, the grapes were really quite pronounced. Unlike other raters, I did not find this beer to be too sweet, but rather a nice balance. In fact, I drank it quite rapidly because I found it to be rather quaffable.

From a 75 cl bottle shared. Pours a cloudy gold with a thick off white head that recedes leaving lots of lacing. Yeasty aroma. Smooth mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. A bit of butterscotch in there.
