Victor Ale lets us blur the lines between brewer and vintner. The brew begins by mashing Pilsner malt with locally grown red grapes. It’s then hopped with Hallertau. The beer is fermented first with a strain of wine yeast, then finished with Belgian abbey-style yeast. Victor Ale presents a pale copper hue, medium body, a pronounced vinous character, and a spicy, tart finish. Its beer sibling is Victoria, which uses chardonnay grapes, but is otherwise identical.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, 2009 bottling. A bit of a gusher upon opening. Pours very cloudy orange amber color with a nice 2 finger dense off white head with very good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Good soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of big grape, apple, pear, biscuit, clove, pepper, grape skin, herbal, earth, honey, caramel, and yeast spiciness. Nice and well balanced aromas with good complexity. Taste of apple, pear, grape, herbal, pepper, biscuit, clove, earth, honey, grape skin, caramel, and yeast spiciness. Slight grape skin tang on the finish; with lingering notes of light fruits, pepper, clove, bread, honey, earth, herbal, and yeast spices on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and flavor complexity; with no cloying flavors at all. Medium carbonation and body; with a lightly slick and syrupy mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with almost no warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice Belgian strong pale ale. Fairly unique flavor profile with great balance and flavor complexity; and very smooth to sip on. Really enjoyed this one.

Bottle @ Armin’s house. A bit hazy, light reddish orange appearance with a white head. Tangy apricot, pomegranate, a touch of red velvet cake, fruity, red grape aroma. Tangy, red grape/strawberry, somewhat tangy, moderate vinous, a bit spicy belgian yeasty flavor. Fairly enjoyable.

On tap at the Brick Store Pub. Pours a hazy, light orange with a medium white head and lots of lacing. The aroma is wheat, lemons, and grapes. The flavor is very sweet, with a little tartness. The palate is medium, crisp and acidic. Clean finish. Overall, this is a delicious, creative, and well made beer.

Draft: Sweaty gym sock funk, white raisins. Cloudy amber, thick head. Well funked vinous flavor. Finishes with a subtle tangerine peel and raspberry. Spritzy mouthfeel. Unique but not my style.

Cloudy dark amber beer. Good white head. Strong ale - some subtle brandy tones. Smooth with a crisp dry finish. The grapes provide a subtle softening sweetness to offset the strength of the beer. Very drinkable.

On tap at the Publican. Poured a hazy gold with a white head that dissipated slowly to the edges and laced slightly. Aroma had a bit of tart grapes with some sweet grains and a nice yeast backing. Flavor was similar with tart grapes with sweet grains, cereal and a bit of biscuit as well as a nice yeast note.
