Tea and grass nose, moderate strength. Cloudy rust, medium yellow head, good lace. Meaty tea and dried leaves flavor, savory and hearty. Subtle caramel base. Finishes almost smoky. Full body. Now this is an imperial red. Don’t get me wrong, I like the hoppy ones, but red ales are malt forward by definition. This typifies what the style should be, a big hearty malt bomb with just enough hops to make it interesting.

It’s not yet Halloween in Ratebeer time, but it is here, so on with the Halloween themed beers! This one is a bomber from Whole Foods Charlottesville. Pours a slightly hazy red color with a medium sized frothy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of toffee malts with spicy, citrusy hops. The taste is citrus hops, a mild pine of pine and strong toffee malts. Medium bodied, a bit on the sweet side but not cloying, mild lingering bitterness, moderate carbonation. Nice beer.
