“Grand Cru” has been used by Belgian brewers for centuries to denote a more elaborate version of their original product. We continue this tradition with Celis Grand Cru, a heartier version of Celis White. 12 oz brown bottle, date code 6256B-21010. When you first pop the lid there is a slight skunk cabbage aroma. After you pour it into the glass it changes to a moderate citrus hop aroma that borders on a soap smell. This inturn morphs into a just plain clean sweet beer olfactory. Virtually no head, just a fizzy girdle around the inside edge of the glass. The color of this is the ubiquitous pale yellow american lager appearance. The initial taste of this brew is moderately bitter, something like an overly done pilsner. Medium body and there is no warmth in the mouth or throat for the amount of alky present. No way can this be the 8% that is stated here, if it is, this stuff really hides the alky flavors well. Quite surprising. The alky impression comes across like pilsner bite, not Belgian strong. After a few drinks there is a mild to medium bitterness that builds on the sides and back of the palate. This is probably one of the least oppressive 8% beers I’ve tasted, next to the real Belgian dubbles and trips. Decent medium carbonation that is welcome one the tongue. Finish is a moderate alky astringent impact, this lasts for a few moments after the last sip. Not quite as good as the refined Maredsous 8, but on par with Legacy Euphoria, Delirium Noël, and Piraat 10.5%. IMHO slightly better than Kasteelbier Blonde 11% and the notorious Gulden Draak.

Hop and sweet clover aroma, erlatively strong. Golden color, thin head, but good lacing. Balanced cherry and hop flavor, a little buttery. Lousy mushroom, yeast, and hop finish. This beer has plenty of flavor and complexity, but not necessarily pleasing. Caveat: Belgian styles are not particularly something I enjoy.

I agree with Brewfiend that this is bland. It looks like a pils. Malt and fruit aroma, but some hops in the flavor, light malt, and some sourness.

Nice golden coloured body with a light white head. Aroma of curacao, wheat, yeast, spices and a strong maltiness. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong malty flavours with wheat and yeast most noticeable. Aftertaste shows some of the spice, malt and even some hops. Overall, a nice beer that tastes like it came from belgium - so that at least is a plus. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Oliver’s Beverage in Albany, New York on 03-March-2007.

Pours slightly cloudy golden color with very minimal fizzy head. The aroma is of yeast, citrus, coriander with some other spices and a slight hint of banana. The flavor starts out with hay and citrus moving more to the citrus mid way through. The spices pop up as this beer finishes with a bit of alcohol also. You couldn’t tell this is 8% if nobody told you. The carbonation is slight, but that doesn’t detract too much from the experiance. A pretty good belgian strong. Would have scored higher if the aroma and apperance were better.

Sample at AleFest Dayton: This brew pours a light yellow/gold color with a medium and foamy white head with good retention. Thin rings of lacing. The aroma is lightly spiced with some citrus. Light-bodied with a zesty spice and citrus character. Some yeast in the background as well. The finish is a little peppery, among other spices. Not bad overall.

Weak aromas of grass and a little bit of spice over a rather dull body that’s a clear straw color with a small head. Flavor is sweey and a little metallic.

Clear bright golden color with a thin white head. Sweet slightly fruity aroma. Sweet malty flavor, nice spice, a bit of citrus, and a bit of grass.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a light golden color with a small white head. The aroma was lemon, wheat and coriander with a strong musty undertone. The flavor was citrus, pepper, coriander, and a tangy malt base. Again there is a musty element that is noticeable. The finish is peppery. There is a strong alcohol burn that dominates this beer.

Lightly hazy blonde with a thin white head. Nice coriander and curacao and spices in aroma. Spicey yeast with clear orange notes and warm alcohol. Rich and onctuous mouthfeel. Mondiale 2005.
