Dark sour ale aged in Leopold Bros whiskey barrels
A demonic dark sour, Nightmare on Brett takes on many facets during its transformation to the sour side. Initially aged in large oak foeders with our mixed culture of wild yeast and bacteria, this beer is then transferred to bourbon and whiskey barrels. The various spirit barrels bring on a new life to this beer as it conditions for months, while obtaining additional bourbon and whiskey characteristics. Dominated by dark fruit aromas and flavors, the underlying cacao notes meld with an acidic tart berry finish. With each batch release being a unique blend of barrels, the multiple variations of Nightmare on Brett released throughout the year prove that with creativity and experimentation, anything is possible.

Bxlbeerfest. Pours black with beige head. Aroma is sour, oaky, roasty. Flavor is sour, oaky, fruity. Finish is roast and intense acidity. Overall: very good.

8 4 7 3 15 Draft at BXL Beer Fest, Brussels ’17. Black with a tan head. Chocolate, tart red fruits, light fruits and caramel. Flavour is moderate sweet and above moderate sour. Above medium bodied with a lactic burn in the finish and soft carbonation. A real shame the finish let’s it down.

Sampled at BXL. Very dark brown pour with a thin tan head. Notes of dark cherries, chocolate, whiskey, vanilla, oak, cherry peats. Really complex, nice wild funk mixed with chocolate and a perfectly integrated barrel. Sour as hell. Delicious.

Exceedingly complex sour, mixing a cocoa-and-coffee-laced dark ale backbone with wickedly tart berry and citrus notes, crashing into one another on your palate like Romans and Gauls (Hardcore History, yo) until a wave of oak-and-vanilla-tinged whiskey booziness wipes the battlefield clean. (I know, I’m stretching the metaphor, but this bastard’s 9.666% and I’m 3/5ths through the bottle. Cut me some slack.) Fig, raisin, cherry, molasses, bread, lemon, and bourbon, all just ricocheting around your face until the bitter oaked fade closes out the night. Pretty opaque red-brown pour with a tan head and moderate lacing. Nose is tart cherry and Belgian dark ale sweetness. Perfect texture, creamy with a barely discernible alcohol warmth. Delicious.

Carnivale Brettanomyces, 2017, van tap @Beertemple. zwart met kaki kraag. aroma geroosterd, zuurtje, fris, kersen, whisky. Smaken zijn redelijk zuur, kersen, fruitig, whisky, hout, mout, medium body.

Draft in the Beer Temple, Carnivale Brettanomyces 2017, with the Dutch RB crew. Dark color. loght beige head. Aroma’s: funky, earthy, sourish. Retronasal it’s sour, light funk Flavor is full on sour. Light bodied. long, tart, dry finish.

Draft at brett fest. Black pour. Aroma of sour berries, lacto sour, oak, soft sweet fruit and tart. Taste has sour berries, oak, lacto sourness, tart and a fruity finish. Nice.

Looks pretty black to me. Lots of tan foam.
Wine like smell with dark pitted fruit, kinda woody and hints of Brett. Whiskey is subdued.
Vinous taste from the fruit and Brett, notes of wood and to a lesser extent, Whiskey.
Great mouthfeel and stoopid easy to drink considering the abv. Worth the bucks? In my opinion, yes.

Tap@Mikropolis, Copenhagen - Black pour with beige head. Aroma and tatse is sour dark fruity, malty, medium to light acidity, dark malt, medium tart sour and malty in the finish.
