Dark sour ale aged in Leopold Bros whiskey barrels
A demonic dark sour, Nightmare on Brett takes on many facets during its transformation to the sour side. Initially aged in large oak foeders with our mixed culture of wild yeast and bacteria, this beer is then transferred to bourbon and whiskey barrels. The various spirit barrels bring on a new life to this beer as it conditions for months, while obtaining additional bourbon and whiskey characteristics. Dominated by dark fruit aromas and flavors, the underlying cacao notes meld with an acidic tart berry finish. With each batch release being a unique blend of barrels, the multiple variations of Nightmare on Brett released throughout the year prove that with creativity and experimentation, anything is possible.

From tap. Pours pitch black with a small brown head. Aroma is fruity, wineous and light roasted. Toasted malty, caramelish and sourish fruity. Lingering dark malty, smooth roasted and sour fruity far finish.

Dark brown with no head. Aroma and flavour of sour red fruits. Some unripe strawberry. Fairly oily texture. Sharp and a bit dry too. Some darker, bitter notes in the finish l. Only a light funkiness.

Tap @ Mig & Ølsnedkeren. Nice head with good duration. Color is red/brown. Aroma and taste are rich sour fruits, wood, lactose acid, malt and little hops. Nice vinous sour finish.

Sampled in line at Zwanze. Batch 3. Pours black, with a small tan ring. Black, tart cherries, brown sugar, vanilla, and lemon juice. Sweet and acerbic, and very sour. Medium body, sticky, acidic, and clingy. This is sour first and predominately, with some pretty good character and aromas.

Säuerlicher Antrunk, keine Malzigkeit, was die Farbe erwarten lässt. Spritzig, die Säure bleibt konstant und weich. Im Mittelteil dann immerhin leicht malzig, sehr trockener Nachhall. 8/11/11/11/9/11

Bottle. A- Chlorine, pool water, sweat, shit, subtle cherry. A- Dark mahogany color, dark liquid, beige head. T- Brett, funky, tart, slightly sour, cherry. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, tart finish. O- Lots of Brett and funk obviously not unbearable. Tart and cherry tones and the aroma is just something else.

Bottled. A black beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of straw, brettanomyces, and caramel. The flavor is acidic with notes of brettanomyces, caramel, and fruit, leading to a lightly tart finish.

375ml bottle. Quasi black colour with small to average, thick, creamy, half-way lasting, moderately lacing, tan head. Fruity, vinous aroma, notes of dark red and blue berries, morello cherry, blue grapes, an oaky and tannic touch, mild hints of balsamico, widely disguised strawberry bubblegum hints of brett. Taste is moderately tart, dry, tangy, fruity, vinous, notes of dark berries, blue grapes, morello cherry, a touch of balsamico, raspberry vinegar, maybe a very cautious touch of vanilla and oak, but eventually no deformation by overly present vestiges of whiskey BA; slightly prickling carbonation. Almost neglectable hints of brett or better, fully integrated, supporting, in no way dominating hints of brett; so much a character of its own - it seems to be of no importance in what barrel it has been conditioned. Surely I’ll have to get a glimpse of the BA and Grand Cru variations to prove this hypothesis.
