Back when Fuller’s originally brewed Double Stout, stout simply meant strong. Now, of course, in modern brewing parlance, stout is a style all of its own. It’s to be expected that a few things have changed in that time though – we first brewed it in 1893.

Bottle. Almost black with a nice, creamy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, wood, roasted malt, some smoke and notes of milk. Also a lot of coffee. The taste was about the same. Not that heavy but a nice beer to sip.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a nicer large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma consists of roasted malt with some sweet lactic notes and black chocolate. Taste is also a nice mix of roasted malt with dry black chocolate notes and some lactic notes. Body is full with a creamy texture and some good carbonation. Interesting experiment though lacking a bit of complexity to be something I would have on a regular basis.

Bottle bought at the brewery shop. Opaque, almost black in colour with a tight, creamy tan head. dense aroma of charcoal, bitter chocolate, liquorice and a touch of sweet prune. Full mouth feel, with a touch of carbonation and warming alcohol. Flavours of chocolate, roasted malts and more fruit, leading to a dry finish. Excellent in every aspect, and preferable to the St Peters Cream Stout tried immediately before.

Bottle from the Spread Eagle, Croydon. It pours very dark brown, with a thin beige lace. The nose is dark chocolate, meat, marmite, liquorice, roasted malt and some tang. The taste is marmite, roasted malt, meat, varnish, toast, burnt malt, tar, dark chocolate and liquorice, with a dry-roasted finish. Full body and fine to low carbonation. Good effort from Fullers.

50 cl bottle @ home, BBE 19.04.2014
Aroma has saltish licorice and some roasted malt, feels like a typical foreign stout. Flavour has lots of licorice, some soy sauce, ash, coffee and roastiness. Dry feeling here. One of the best foreigns I’ve had!
