Back when Fuller’s originally brewed Double Stout, stout simply meant strong. Now, of course, in modern brewing parlance, stout is a style all of its own. It’s to be expected that a few things have changed in that time though – we first brewed it in 1893.

(500mL bottle from LCBO) Poured cool, nearly pitch black with an inch of fine beige head that faded without lace. Aroma of roasted malts, cacao, coffee, woodsy smoky vanilla/leather, berries, bit of soya. Flavour initially roasted malts, slight creamy sweetness, then more bitter hops, cacao beans and dark coffee, finishes dry with smoky coffee roast and a medicinal anise tang. Body medium, somewhat creamy, carbonation soft, alcohol warmth moderate. Old-school stout, complex and interesting, dry and dangerously drinkable compared to RIS.

50 cl bottle from De Bierkoning @ home. Almost black color, beige head. Aroma’s: real old fashioned (export) stout, hard roasted malts, coffee/mocha, drop/laurel, some red fruit (berries), hint of soy sauce. Flavor is roasted, medium bitter-ish, light sweet, droppig. Body is on the thin side, but alcohol is warming. Finishes with roast and a mild bitterness. Nice!

A room temperature bottle sold to me by a nice man in the Fullers pub! Opaque black brown beer. Good bubbly pale tan head. A light semi dry palate. The dark malt is quite mild with a trace of licorice. A little tang, whisper of milky coffee. Semi dry finish with the dark malt tang lingering in the aftertaste. Light for it’s abv.

50cl bottle from the brewery. Pours pitch black with a sherry glow and a ring of beige head; the aroma has richly roasted chocolate malts and peaty smoke; the flavour is intense, with red fruit, dark chocolate and deeply roasted coffee; the body is smooth and silky; and the finish dry, fruity, biscuity and warming. An excellent stout.

Bottled. A dark brown beer with a dark brown head. The aroma has notes of alcohol, chocolate, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, chocolate, and alcohol, as well as a bit of bread, leading to a dry finish.

The LCBO got a bunch of different Fuller’s this past Christmas, and this is one of them. Pours a dark cola brown colour with very little red highlights. The head is big, creamy, beige, long-lasting and creates great lacing. Aromas of roasted malts, molasses, coffee, caramel and hints of anise. Smooth mild creamy mouthfeel with a little wetness. The roasted malt is felt a bit more in the taste with a nice roasted finish. Notes of nuts, chocolate, coffee and very light dark fruits. Smoke lingers in the aftertaste. A very easy-to-drink Imperial Stout.

Bottle at chriso vintage tasting. Pours dark brown with a medium, beige foam head. A bit of chocolate syrup in the aroma, some mocha. Medium sweet flavor, dark sugar, tar, light tobacco, decent roast. Medium bodied with fine carbonation. Moderate dry roast finish, faint alcohol warmth, more tar, dark cocoa, burnt grass. Lasting baking cocoa. Nice beer.

500ml Bottle - Black with a tan head. Plain chocolate, roasted malt, tar and some smoky hints in the aroma. Rich, roasted and chocolatey taste with some fruity and smoky hints detected. Complex and rich, yet very drinkable and enjoyable.
