Past Masters 1893 Double Stout

Back when Fuller’s originally brewed Double Stout, stout simply meant strong. Now, of course, in modern brewing parlance, stout is a style all of its own. It’s to be expected that a few things have changed in that time though – we first brewed it in 1893.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks Tom. Dark brown to black with a beige to light brown head. Great roasty aroma full of dark chocolate and a bit of soy sauce. Sweetish flavor with lots of chocolate, continues drier and roasty. Medium to full-bodied, silky mouthfeel.

Smak och doft av choklad, kaffe, karamell, laktris, toner av rök och apelsin. Lagom sötma, len och krämig munkänsla med en bra bitter beska. En riktigt god stout med klassisk engelsk känsla.

Purchased from the brewery shop at Fullers Griffin Brewery, Chiswick and poured into a Fullers ESB large pint goble (drank Mar ’12). Pours a very dark brown ’almost’ black in colour with a large frothy tan head. Dark roasted malts make up the majority of the aroma and in the background a definate whiff of chocolate allied to a little nut and smoke. Great tastes in this well balanced beer, picking up on all the favourites of a good old school stout that so many beers lack. From chocolate and coffee to leather, nut, a little dark fruit, a good dose of smoke - more so than on the nose and a small pinch of liquorice. A little woody on the finish. Medium to full in body, well disguised alcohol for a 7%+ beer! A fairly creamy texture which teases the throat for more and a small amount of carbonation which befits this style of beer. Overall a very good beer and I’ll definiately seek out again.

Bottle. Mild roasted aroma. Black colour. No head. The flavour is sweet and roasted. Good roasted flavour with a little sweet liquorice and some nice rye bread.

Black color; medium sized beige head, creamy but not long persistent. Quite strong aroma of cardboard, cream, roasted malts, vanilla, leather, wood; interesting, different from most other Stouts. Strong body with smooth mouthfeel; the dominant flavor is chocolate, followed by more heavily roasted malts, and with a trace of liquorice; low bitterness, some of it from the roasted malts, and light late ashes; balanced. Very pleasant.
