When people think "lager" they often think low levels of alcohol, extremely clean, clear, light colored beer. Not necessarily so! Lager simply refers to the type of yeast used (lager yeast like cold temperatures, and this allows brewers to remove more sediment from the beer, which does in fact make it "cleaner"). "Bock" beers represent an interesting category of lagers. What really distinguishes bocks from other lager styles is their maltiness. To some extent bock, and certainly dopplebock (or “double bock” in English) are “sweeter” than other beer styles. They do have some hop bitterness (similar to the Helles or Dortmunder) but it’s just not enough to counteract all of the malted barley. Bocks are the “anti-IPA” in that the focus is on malty sweetness and not on hop bitterness. If you can't stand IPAs, try our Bock!
