Malted barley is the cornerstone of Scottish brewing. Hops, less so. However, we wanted to try something very different – and made Young Pretender our driest, hoppiest ale
Shimmering gold and refreshingly full-flavoured, Young Pretender is an ale to challenge received wisdom.
Much like the Skye Brewery itself – very much an upstart in an industry sometimes reluctant to embrace the new.
Available in bottles at 3.8% ABV, draft at 4%.
Hops: Challenger
Malts: Maris Otter, Medium Crystal

500ml bottle from the brewery. Poured a crystal clear golden colour with a mostly lasting frothy white head. The aroma is grainy malt, light citrus fruits, light woody hop. The flavour is moderate to light bitter, with a light, slightly watery, crisp, fresh, light citrus, woody hop bitter palate and a lingering bitter finish. Medium to light bodied with average carbonation. A light, but fresh and clean golden ale. Quite refreshing and fairly drinkable for the ABV.

Clear, golden-orange colored, small off white head. Malty, some grain, medium sweetness and bitterness, bit toasty, quite light fruity and herbal hops, dry bitter finish. Medium bodied, soft- carbonation, bit oily. Could be fresher.

Cask at GRAF. Clear golden with a thin white head. Sweet fruit aroma, flavour is tart, gooseberry maybe, with a sweet undertone. Not unpleasant but not great either
